Dominance

When one first looks at a seemingly beautiful night scene he or she may
conclude right away that it is in fact a magnificent display -- that the
aurora is grand and wonderful above the mountainous landscape below. Surely,
it is a beautiful sight. But, for some reason, there are other feelings and
thoughts which seem to come to us unconsciously. Why would we feel fear or
insecurity amidst such a magnificent "presence?" Possibly it is because we
are reminded of someone in our lives who may have taken control of situations
-- who may have overshadowed us in some way. The veil in this painting is a
symbol of all that may "cover" the flight of our true spirit. It is "bigger
than life" yet somehow disturbing to all over which it presides. The
mountains, although small in relation to it, are symbolic of our own
strengths and character. This "human landscape", if you will, is in conflict
with the disturbing forces hanging overhead somehow dwarfing all that would
otherwise be "right sized" on its own.
