Good-Bye
It is a simple scene. The moon gently and quietly hovers above the lighted
landscape. It floats and yet appears also to be slipping away from us. I like
this scene partly because the moon also appears to be "protected" by the
graceful arching walls of the valley into which it descends. The painting's
title: "Good-bye" speaks to the final moment when it (and we) must say so
long to it. Although a beautiful moment, in nature, this "good-bye" speaks
also to the emptiness in the valley after our friend eventually vanishes. It
would possibly seem to be an incomplete scene (without it). Like a missing
pearl in the comforting curve of a mother's oyster shell, the lighted moon
will be swallowed up by a cosmic ocean. We can only wonder where and when she
will reappear. For now, we must watch and expect this last moment to be
fairly short lived. We can appreciate the exit. We can say: "Good-bye."
