Grand Designs I
This is the first in a series of four paintings thus far. At first glance,
one may see a "grand design" or quilt-like pattern resting in an almost
suspended fashion over a sepia background. A window with a star-lit scene (or
second quilt if you prefer) rests nearby. When I began this painting, I was
excited since it very closely accomplished what I wanted to say about the
Universe in light of religion, mathematics and philosophy. God for many
people is considered more a creator of Nature whose existence is confirmed
over and over by an appreciation of such things as gravity, flowers,
starlight and frogs. We cannot understand so much and yet, we can ask: "How
did this come to be?" And for me, this question is itself confirmation of a
grand design. To ask this and other curious questions is, to me, another way
of saying something else really -- It is to say: "Who are we in relation to
all of this? And how wonderful it is to see such order and balance --- and
chaos -- in this mysterious thing we call the Universe."
