Peace On Earth

This is one of my earliest pieces of art. I was 22 when I drew this in the
living room where I grew up in Weston, CT. It was recently re-discovered
somewhat by accident as a result of a job-related client search on Facebook by someone
named Arlene. Arlene and I dated some 39 years ago! I gave the
framed drawing as a gift to her for Christmas in 1971. I was a senior and
Arlene was a freshman at our college in Pennsylvania. She attached an image
of the drawing in an email today (1-20-2010). This drawing has some personal
memories associated with it. I think my brother's campaigning for Eugene
McCarthy in 1968 as well as the ongoing conflict in Vietnam may have inspired me to make
design. I had also completed a stained glass piece of art -- which I had given
to my mother. The stained glass piece was very similar to this graphic
idea. I will try to find its image in the next few days and provide a link
here. I can remember showing "Peace on Earth" to my parents after I had
completed it one night while they were chatting with friends over cocktails. I
was very proud of it and showed it to them. I said I felt the design might be
something I could submit for an art show at college. I think I was on
Christmas vacation at the time. I decided to show it there in Waynesburg, PA.
After the show, I gave it to Arlene. I did not realize it still
existed after all these years. What a nice gift back to me today from
Arlene! And what a fitting title for our time in 2010. The "piece"
is now alive and well in the state of Wisconsin.
[A note from Charles: "Peace on Earth," now referred to as POE by Arlene and me,
was shipped back to me in Massachusetts on January 25, 2010. It has faded
considerably over the years and both she and I would like for it to be touched
up. I will be reframing POE as well for Arlene. It's initial
framing was done by me in a way my father would often frame photographs. He
used black electrical tape (and sometimes blue) wrapping it around the edges of the
glass and the backing. This was economically practical but did not withstand
the aging process very well. These links will lead you to the full
restoration of POE. The gallery image of the old and faded
"Peace on Earth was replaced by me on February 4, 2010. The
original, un-restored image can be found in the restoration link above.] End of
Note.
