Power
In the early 1970's I can remember seeing "2001 A Space Odyssey."
Maybe you can remember a scene similar to this one. The "monolith"
captivated me as did the majestic symphonic music. One word always
came to mind each time the monolith reappeared: "Power." There was
something about its simplicity, its strength, its weight. The gray,
shiny steel seemed almost dangerous to touch -- at least to the apes
who, in the movie, curiously and cautiously moved about its base. To
me it seemed God-like. To this day, I still do not know what it was.
But it was powerful. I knew that. I like to paint it because it has
a nice design. In some ways it appears entirely out of place. It
simply does not "belong" in the scene depicted. Yet, in another
respect, it seems to minimize all that it "presides over." It not
only belongs, it has all authority and strength. It can only be
revered and respected. I placed the aqua-colored crescent body
behind it to further show the monolith's importance. To me, it seems
to also be a symbol of the intelligent life we think may exist
elsewhere.
