Returning
The above image is the full drawing for 'Returning.' There are 4
individual designs each described in detail below with images
The lower right portion of this design is an attempt to integrate the
3 other designs by linking them with a continuous path which both
begins and ends here in this image. As with Life, the journey we and
all things make "begins" at some point. It ends at another.
"Returning" is both a symbolic attempt to highlight the wonderful and
unpredictable path of our own destiny -- or that of any living thing,
but also to say something about Time itself.
Within the "Beginning" of this part of the drawing, there appears to
be a lens or focal point of activity. It is here where it is actually
unclear where the beginning begins, or for that matter when! And since
Time itself is quite meaningless relative to any defined "start" or
"end" point, it is quite interesting to think about a Life itself as a
Birth and a Death each occurring in an undefined "duration" of Time.
For any Present moment, there is both a Birth and a Death occurring.
Could infinity actually be viewed as a "split second" in time relative
to something "bigger?" I would like to think my Returning drawing
speaks to this amazing mystery.
Likewise, I wanted to say something about the experience of Returning"
itself. As we grow older, coming closer and closer to the end of our
lives, I find it interesting that many of us experience a re-awakening
of our childhood memories, ideas, thoughts, longings and insights. And
so, in this way we "Return" to the same place from which we came into
the universe.
The "lens" in this part of my drawing was at first going to be a
galaxy of sorts. There would have been a swirl of dots (stars) and
other spiraling details. Although not a galaxy now, I like to still
think of this as being one. There is much energy here. And when we
"return," much is released again -- in spirit.
Finally, I wanted to say something about the 4 other "designs" through
which the path "travels." I'd like to think of these as the
transitional "phases" of our lives. They are entirely different from
one another, yet somehow "part" of who we are to become later on. They
are also very complex and (yes) beautiful on their own. All people
have transitions. No matter what happens in the course of our lives,
hopefully our paths will not only integrate wonderfully with good
intention(s) but also with others. We all came from the same seed. And
so the trip is not to be taken alone.
