Sea Birth
I completed a new drawing which I am calling "Sea Birth." Although
in some respects it looks unfinished, this is not the case. The size
is 10 inches x 14.5 inches. It is a mixed media piece beginning with
a base drawing in technical pen. To this, Prismacolor pencils were
used to fill in details. The sun was painted in orange, red and
white gouache.
Image 1 of 8 - "Sea Birth" - A more distant view of the sun with its
banding in the upper left -- which was eliminated later.
Image 2 of 8 - "Sea Birth" - The lower portion of the creature before the sun was painted.
Image 3 of 8 - "Sea Birth" - The experiment (with the sun) involving
intentionally erased colored pencil lines to capture a planetary
banding effect with soft colored clouds. This became too complex and
I began to think the attention was being pulled away from the
creature.
Image 4 of 8 - "Sea Birth" - A stencil was cut with a #11 Exacto
blade (into thin, clear film) for only areas to be painted for the
sun. It was left to dry and then carefully removed.
Image 5 of 8 - "Sea Birth" - The drawing's early development
(rotated 90 degrees clockwise) showing the sun's colored pencil
upper right detail which was eliminated in favor of a simpler
background design.
Image 6 of 8 - "Sea Birth" - Close up of sea creature's middle lower detail
