Star Mosaic

'Star Mosaic' is the first in a series of several abstract 15 x 15
inch paintings which are intended to include both color - in gouache
as you see it here - and technical pen. The three "sprays" are my
representation of "stars" Each was drawn seperately with the left one
being drawn first. The next one was the upper right one. I tried to
vary each of their designs and to "interlace" them internally while
also keeping in mind their outer border would need to be
"encompassed" with a hidden pencil line to indicate where colorful
gouache boundaries would help to "define" their existance with more
prominance. Additionally, I thought it would be interesting to "break
up" the inner space into individual parts so a color scheme could be
incoporated in a dark-to-light hue progression from bottom to top
respectively. I picked "Star Mosaic" as a title quite simply because
it looked as if the "stars" were nestled within a mosaic pattern much
like ceramic tiles or stone-work patterns sometimes look.

Finally, this piece was completed on June 26, 2025 -- following a
"decision" NOT to complete a rather complex piece called 'Integration
I." 'Integration I' required some precise painting for a complex
design of my own based on the "Golden Ratio" -- incorporating 19
circles whose orientartion needed to "fit" perfectly within a 30-60-90
degree background pattern. The piece was quite time consuming, so
I decided to store all the materials away for another day!

I was happy with 'Star Mosaic' for a few reasons. One of them was it
took a little less than a week to complete -- about 32 hours. Another
was how the "plan" for the design evolved as I worked on it. There
were about 5 ideas I had to keep in mind as it all eventially became
more colorfully balanced.
