The Cradle

On earth (if viewed toward the West) our moon would be in "its
infancy" being only a few days old. "The Cradle" is an appropriate
title I think since it appears to have open arms accentuating the
space above it which appears in dim light and is part of itself. The
sky is void of starlight in much of this lunar scene. Yet the gentle
arc of the brightly lighted crescent does not (at least to me) seem
in any way seem to be "off to the left" -- creating an uncomfortable
imbalance. On the contrary, because of the cradle-form, there
appears to be a nice balance suggesting that something should "rest
in this space." And, quite appropriately, we see a suggestion of
perfect circular form found in the dim light of its own night side.
This results in a comfortable balance of light and dark out in the
very middle of the sky. The two spires help to create a feeling of
vastness and perspective in this final painting of this celestial
series.
