The Earth Speaks

Children often see quickly the familiar shape of the volcanic cone
with its molten lava fires coming so powerfully from its top.
"Mommy, let's get this," they say as they look to the paintings on
the lowermost row at my shows. It is wonderful to see the
unobstructed vision of children as they view things on the verge of
abstraction. Often, adults are not able to readily see beyond the
complexity of the colors and forms.
As its title suggests, I was interested in "getting to the heart" of
a description for the great power that lies deep in the core of the
body we live on. Beneath the crust of Earth there are forces which
must be incredible to comprehend. If one were to dig downward "to
China" deep into that cave we dug as children -- and to succeed
finally in reaching the 4,000 mile point, one would find "the
center" of our planet. Imagine the heat generated from 4,000 miles
of solid rock on all sides of our great tunnel 1/2 way to the other
side. It is here where all power for our surface volcano is born.
And in a violent eruption we can remember that power lies deep
within. Like the birth of a small star, it is far away at the
surface that "the Earth speaks" from its fiery belly far below.
