The Music of Silence

The title "The Music of Silence" was chosen in response to some
feelings some of us may have had from time to time about how
wonderful it feels NOT to hear the sounds of "normal" daily
activity. In contrast to what may be the harsh sounds of a
construction crew's road equipment at a busy and confusing
intersection, or even to the internal chaos itself (here) in trying
to determine WHEN best to respond to a traffic officer's hand
signals -- is the peace and serenity we feel in a quiet open field
in the evening. Fire flies may hover over wet grass near a path on
which we may have been walking. And even if the stillness is
mingled with the songs of evening birds, still there exists a
peaceful contrast to the loud orchestrations of our hectic work day.
And throughout the loud and distracting chorus of people, places,
and things, there tends also to be a constant interplay of all these
things, leading us to a place far removed from it all. Sometimes we
are able "to get away," if only briefly, to those places which bring
deep understanding and meaning. It is not until we look into the
realm of nature and into our intimate relationship with it, that we
are then able to be at peace with things that always exist in and
around us. In prayer and meditation we can reflect at times much
more easily and be open to the spiritual possibilities. It is in
this music of the silence around us that we see and hear the
symphony of our soul.
