Unity

I wanted to say something about the synthesis of Reason here in my painting. Almost by default, I was drawn to shapeless shapes that were whole and which appeared to have "empowering" paths -- paths that lead to the center of something. Was it God? Did the use of the Universe as a backdrop for such a theme succeed in affirming the most conducive environment for such an absolute theme? Is there really something in Heaven we seek? Or is it here on earth that we find what we are looking for? "Reason" is defined in the dictionary as "the power of the intellect by which man attains to truth or knowledge." There is one phrase in this definition that made me ask another question. It is the phrase "to truth or knowledge." At first it sounded awkward. But then it seemed appropriate since it seemed true man could not fully know reason in its "absolute" and perfect form. He could only aspire to it, use it, and attempt to know it. My abstract violet form is symmetric and complete. The arms which "hold it in place" are balanced and nurturing, much like a celestial sort of umbilical cord to life itself. Why was reason the object of this artistic expression? I felt it was important to say something not only about man (and woman), but to represent the harmony in the promises they seek THROUGH reason. The physical "shape" of such a symbol for our quest seems appropriate in this case since I believe we are all seeking to know the greater meaning in a single Being. Unity, in this sense is "easy" for us to understand. I think we are all looking for the same thing. It is not a collection of several things. It is one thing. It is Unity.
