Volunteered at the HTC Quarter Marathon. My grandson Aiden helped and did
a great job handing out water(without putting his fingers inside the cup)
and giving high 5s. This evening I did 5 miles once relieved of grandson
watching duties to keep my streak alive. Sunday I am doing a practice run
of the Traprock 17K.

Distance: 5.06 miles (Sat)

Course: To Ayer Center, then through the rotary and back home. Flat

Elevation Gain: 89 ft.
Shoes: OLD ones.
T-Minus: 16 days

Comment: Had breakfast with the Concord Runners and bagged to run
because it was wet cold and snowy with slush all over. MUCH later in
the day (after work) I decided to run in my OLD shoes. NEW ones seem
unpredictable! I'm clueless as to which ones to wear for the race.
Yesterday's run and how I felt all day today at work -- before my run
-- indicated the NEW ones might be a problem after all. Yesterday I
thought otherwise. The OLD ones today, seemed not to cause as much
pain. PL=2 to 3. After icing and heat, PL=1.

MCT - Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 16:54:31 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Ran Bimbler Bash 10K(really 7+ miles) today. Didn't know what to expect having
never run a Bimbler before. Figured 2 hours or less is OK. I finished in
1:38 and placed 2nd in my age group. Very happy with that. Wet and very muddy.
Lou Loban was running the food stand after our finish. 53 miles for the week.

ceb - Monday, April 3, 2017 at 04:25:11 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I worked out a PACE CHART for Boston today. Since they say I need
4:10 to qualify, I've subtracted a whole 3 minutes from it to insure
entry into 2018 (in the event I am insane enough to run another
marathon... and hey! I might be). So, that would make the needed time
4:07. The following chart is accurate for a 4:06:56 marathon. The
linear pace is 9:25 per mile. Can I do it? We shall see. "You got
this Chip." You got this!

Distance: 15.00 miles (Sun)
Time: 02:23:47
Pace: 9:35 / mile
Course: Pinnacle Hill in Harvard, then down to Harvard Center and back
Weather: Clear, cool and dry with near half moon lighting the roads
Elevation Gain: 1,636 ft.
Shoes: OLD ones.
T-Minus: 15 days

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1655503046

Comment: Wore yet a third pair of OLDER shoes and abandoned that idea
after about 20 strides since they felt too big and loose. Had a gut
feeling the most recent OLD pair would not aggravate my foot too
much. Took a gamble with the lack of cushioning. Felt reasonably
well during the whole 15 mile run with no stops. Drank 16 oz. water
just before running. Pain seemed about the same as on most recent
runs (PL=2 and sometimes 3). Oddly, it did not feel like the arch
muscle itself had lost any of its "push-off" power at any point in
the hills. It was also not too sore when flexing it -- which makes
me think it is mainly a sheath (fascia) inflammation AROUND the
working muscle. THAT apparently is not getting worse, but it's
healing real slow if at all now. The pace was good. I tried to push
it a bit, bit not so much that it wore me out or strained the foot.
I'm thinking of purchasing some arch supports for the OLD less
cushiony shoes. I wore the NEW shoes all day yesterday and they
hurt! Go figure!! Dang! If the arch supports in the OLD shoes help
the pain, I may wear them in Boston.

Tracy (and Joe), thanks again for the recommendation on 15 miles (not
20)! I think this might really save me.

Weekly summary: 42.11 4.89 miles under plan

tlz - Monday, April 3, 2017 at 09:58:22 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Ran 14 miles with Vanessa at around a 10 min. pace. Parked at LaSalle's in
Collinsville and ran toward and past the VDP (virtual dirt pile) for 7 miles
and back. Then had coffee and pastry at LaSalle's. 28 miles for me for
the week. Lake Waramaug is looking bleaker and bleaker. I was spent after
the 14 yesterday, never mind twice that and then some. Perhaps targeting
something in the fall might be a wiser choice.

Glad you got a nice run in w/ Vanessa Tray. Mike, your Bimblers and streak

you Chip to get a great Boston. Will be calling you to see how we can meet

Shoes: OLD ones WITH AWESOME INSERTS!!!!!!!
T-Minus: 13 days

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1659014346

Comment: As my shoe comment indicates, I think I have found the key
to happiness. INSERTS! I wore my OTHER OLDer shoes yesterday at work
with the new inserts and immediately felt good in them all day. I tried using
them in my less OLD shoes tonight running and experienced much less pain --
almost none at some points (PL = 0-1.5). Pace felt comfortable at
about 70% effort. Tomorrow I'll try wearing the OLDer shoes that
seem to be wider and have more remaining cushion than my most recent
OLD ones. Still not sure which OLD ones to wear in the race, but I'm
nearly convinced I won't be wearing he NEW ones.

Lee, sorry to hear about the car key. Going back and not finding it
must have doubly sucked. Glad you got a ride to work. Not that this
is very funny to you, but I can't resist noticing at this very
second that my entry included the sentence: "I have found the key to
happiness." Hahaha. You can shoot me now.

On another matter, I just learned yesterday that Michael Wilson will
not be able to take me in for the night on Sunday 4/16 at his place
in Cambridge. He felt terrible about giving me this news, but I told
him not to worry at all. His wife Janet booked an Easter party at
their place way in advance and Michael forgot about the date. I have
two work-around ideas, which we can discuss when you call. I'll
mention them here. One is to drive to Alewife T-Station and park all
day in the garage there on Monday 4/17 (and take the RED and GREEN
lines to where I gotta go.) The other is to stay with you and Linda
in Riverside, then take the GREEN line in to do my thing with the
busses from Boston to Hopkinton. I have Sat, Sun and Monday off from
work,. We'll talk. ps. Thanks for the shoe support. Get it? :)

Comment: Good run. Improvement still slow with the arch, but less
and less worried it will act up in the long run. (PL=1-2 today).
The two pairs of shoes (OLD and OLDer) differ in that one is a racing
shoe and the other is a training shoe. The ones I wore tonight
(OLDer) are training shoes and feel wider and bigger and maybe
heavier. Their cushion is better. Strangely, I feel slower in them.
The racing shoes are more worn and less cushiony, but they fit real
well and make me FEEL faster. They seem to have less foot strike
area (which mentally makes me feel faster in them). They are also
lighter. I am 60% in favor of those despite the slightly less
cushion. Am I obsessing? Yup.

Hey Mike, nice work on the Cape Cod Hospital X-Ray unit sales!

6.0 miles for me today at approximately a 9:35 pace. My watch was acting

Sunny and very warm today.

Got my BAA mailing about a week ago and jotted down a few notes for

this feature.

BOSTON STATS:

NOTE: My 3rd Wave start time will be at 10:50 am (ideally)

1. Shooting (ideally) for a personal record since 2015 of 3:54:40 or
better. (PACE = 8:57) Finish Time = 2:44:40 PM

2. Next will be to break 4:00:00 (PACE = 9:10) Finish Time = 2:50:00 PM

3. Next will be to qualify with 4:07:30 (the approximate 2.5 minutes
has been subtracted from the needed 4:10:00 for my AG) (PACE = 9:27)
Finish Time = 2:57:30 PM

If I had to guess at a finishing marathon time, I will go out on a
limb and say it will be 3:57 and change (PACE = 9:03) -- although I
would be very happy with 4:07:30.

Mile 16 to 21 will be the real test!

I did Boston!! So glad to get this one "in the books" for me. As
Lee knows, this one was "elusive" to me for many years. Thanks for
all your support and "tracking" throughout the race. As you all may
know by now, this was NOT an easy race by any means from about mile
18 on. Went out ahead of plan as shown in the split times, and at
about 3 points, had to "lose my cookies." The heat and the pace got
to me and (at mile 25) had to literally WILL my body to run. It was
an experience in and of itself. I'll never forget it. Cramping in
my calves after meeting Lee and Linda in the public garden had me
down for a while, but dinner and Linda's amazing tiger balm menthol
stuff seemed to take all pains away! Feel now like I could run a
mile or two! But will take this day off to relax. On this day
after, I seem to have pulled nothing and my left foot seems 90% ok!

Needed about 4:07:30 to qualify (WITH the built in cushion) but
crossed at 4:05:39, so I am in for next year if I go that route. I'm
happy with the time. It was truly a memorable day!

Thank you Lee and Linda! You made it the best!

3.14 miles today. Like that number Lee? I tacked on .02 to get it
just for you! Felt relatively well. No issues. Pace was 9:38/mile.
Sunny and breezy into Ayer Center and to the railroad overpass and
back. Still amazed about Boston and how much fun it was despite the
challenges. Wow.

Glad you hung in there with your run today Lee. Glad you were not
hurt more than were.

Wow, Chip! Congratulations on an awesome Boston! I have never puked during
or after a run and have no idea how people go on after puking. I am envious.
LOL I think I'd be like, "God, I gotta lay down."

Ran 9 today/9:35 pace.

I am still considering running Lake Waramaug next Sun. I can't remember
if they allow race day registration? I am afraid to commit. :/ Saw the
preliminary forecast - 70/55 with chance of showers.

MCT - Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 21:29:07 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Did 7 miles today but more important is that today is my 800th consecutive
day running. That's 2.190 years without a day off. Boy am I tired!! Now
to keep going to 1,000 days. Chip...that "caveman" was a 50ish year old
guy who ran barefoot and basically naked. He had a small patch of cloth over
his you know what. He had long dark hair, tanned, and rock solid. I think
this link works-->  http://www.runnersworld.com/boston-marathon/nearly-naked-caveman-crushes-boston-marathon

Tracy...Do it!! Just finish and don't worry about the time.

Ran a 10k in N. Stonington yesterday @ 11. Kinda slow, just over 10 minute
pace. Also kinda raw, wet and windy. Raised money for a great cause, an organization
called Chikumbuso. Linda bought a couple of handmade bags. Had wine @ Jonathan
Edwards Winery which is where the race took place. Had dinner w/ Tray in
the evening. Happy Birthday me!

Walked / ran w/ Rose and Linda this morning at Pistol Creek in Berlin (hilly
/ trail / gorgeous). I want everybody to do this with me sometime. Will do
10+ @ Rogers O at 2 today.

tlz - Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 23:30:52 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Forgot to log Friday's run - 5 miles/9:30ish pace.

Ran 11 today with Lee at Rogers Orchard - 11:40 pace.

31 miles for the week. Still hemming and hawing about Waramaug but leaning
toward going. Just registered for 3 Days at the Fair - 48 hour race. OMG!

ceb - Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 23:46:28 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

6 miles today. Pace 9:18 / mile. Sunny, beautiful weather.
66 degrees and dry. Took the Groton Farm hill route (low rolling)
twice at 3 miles ea. 271 ft elevation gain.

Saw these daffodils at mile 2.75 on my run today. I saw a man
planting them last fall. The stone "pillar" is one of two at his
farm-field entrance in Groton.

Didn't see the cave man, Mike. Sure looks aboriginal!! Pretty sure
he was ahead of me the whole way with a 3+ hour finish time. He was
very speedy. Yes, Tracy, blowing lunch is not recommended although
the good news is that it was QUITE a relief after (3 times) since it
was 99% water coming up. Gross!!!!!!!! still!

Nice job in N. Stonington, Lee. Glad you had a fun time. Happy
B-Day again to you.

loops at Waramaug.

8 miles in Scranton PA. Pace was 11:09. Did 7 miles yesterday back home. Out
here at a meeting. Ran from downtown out to Marywood University. Nice area
but hilly. I guess I should taper at some point!!

Mike, don't worry, I tapered for you, me, and half of the entrants! LOL
Oh shit, it's gonna be interesting. Last long run was 22 miles 8 weeks
ago.

Got me a new Garmin! Arrived yesterday.

On Tray's Waramaug news: Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

Nice watch, Lee!

I'm behind with my logging! Took Monday off. Ran Tuesday the 25th
4.08 miles in a 9:22 pace. Felt ok. Took a flat route to the Ayer
rotary and back.

Tuesday's Garmin

I ran 3.11 miles on Wednesday the 26th but the following Garmin data I
think is off. The distance was more like 3 miles with a slower pace
of about 9:40 / mile.

Wednesday's Garmin

Skipped Thursday's run. Went out to dinner with friends and basically
didn't feel up to hitting the roads last night.

Feeling some post marathon blues, but did some drawing today and will
go for a run now before work.

Been doing some reading and started a new *public* blog.
(It's kinda deep and somewhat journal like... and rather "random" in subject matter...)
but I've decided to make it public and keep it. Would you believe I
have started 23 blogs and only about 3 have ever been public?

Finished the book "A New Earth" by Ekhart Tolle. Have started a new
book called "A Path with Heart" by Jack Kornfield -- which was
recently recommended to me.

Meeting with an old Concord running friend (Dorothy "Dot") tomorrow
afternoon. She is back east and living in Harvard. Might have lunch
and or dinner.

ceb - Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 03:02:47 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

My Garmin is really acting weird. The map indicaes an additional .36 miles
"as the bird flies" through the forest -- and I was just not there! Strange.
So, today I REALLY did 6 miles in about a 9:40 pace. I took the somewhat
hilly Groton Farm loop. Hot! 84 degrees!

lrb - Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 02:43:51 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Newtown - Rooster Run 5k

28:44 minutes 9:30 pace 1st in 70+

Cromwell - Mahoney Sabol 5k

9:37 pace 29:59 1st in 75-80 division. Got beat by 5 minutes by Joe Heffernan.
Guy Polino got me too. Hot. Met Kate Stallfort, a 169er, at the 2nd race. This is
my 96th town. Registered to run Woodstock Jog with Judy 5k next Saturday.

See you at Waramaug. Bruce Goulart is running. Louise Melanson is running.

ceb - Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 18:28:09 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Nice picture! Looks like you may be racking up some hardware these
days, Lee with your new division status! Nice work on your 96th town!

5.04 miles at 8:57/mile pace. Took a flat route into Ayer center and
back. The problematic new shoes seem to still be in "problematic"
mode but nothing too serious, so I favored an older pair with inserts
today. No problem with those. Left arch has only some minor
soreness still.

Weekly summary: 22.12 miles

Another Lake Waramaug in the books. I ended up getting a 50K PR - 5:01:48.
I haven't done a ton of 50Ks and the very first one I did was this one back
in 2011. My time was 5:30:20. So here I am 6 years older with sub-par training
and 28 min. faster. I'll take it! I really was hoping for a sub-5 hour
but I just couldn't pull it off. At the 50K turnaround, which is about 1.9
miles from the finish, my left calf muscle cramped and stopped me in my tracks.
I thought I was going to have to crawl back to the finish and have a time
closer to 5:30. I was able to massage it out and was carrying Tiger Balm
with me so put that on it. Still second-guessing why/how I could've shaved
off 2 more minutes. Joe had an awesome race - 4:26 and change. But he's
actually been training more than me! Go figure.

So great to see Linda and Lee and Mike. Lee, congrats on your double 5Ks
yesterday!
