Last week I did 2:45 of pool running. It was kind of a busy week finishing
out at Athena and getting ready to start at Middlesex Health. I'm still
doing hospice but for a much better organization. :)

Playing catch up with my running and entries this morning.
This was a low mileage week again!! I ran 3 days this week.
Today I ran 3 miles. Yesterday I ran about 5.5 with the Concord Runners.

Yesterday's Concord run accidentally included a drive to Dunkin' afterword!
I forgot to shut off my watch after about 1/2 mile of driving!

I haven't posted in a while simply because I spaced out. Did 6 miles down
to Collinsville today. My running life hasn't changed. Running (slow), some
walking, and bike riding. I'm doing more bike riding because it gives me
a chance to go long distances and fast....something the legs can't give me!!
My longest ride so far was going out to Peoples Forest and Barkhamsted Reservoir.
That round trip from my house was 31 miles. I was exhausted then it occurred
to me we used to run races that were longer!! I will enter a few 5Ks this
year which may become my standard race distance. Time will tell. BTW...August
24th is the anniversary of my fall on the Metacomet that resulted in the
torn meniscus. Hard to believe it's been a year.

I did 3 hours, 15 min. worth of pool running this week. I am seriously ready
to join the Y. I'm tired of being dependent on the weather for my workouts
and, today, there was a slew of the most obnoxious, inconsiderate people
at the pool. No less than 3 jerks just about swam into me. Grrr.

Glad the tree didn't land on your house, Lee. And nothing wrong with walking.

Chip, low mileage is better than no mileage. :)

Mike, biking is not a bad alternative and still possible to get in those
long workouts. I'm wondering (and hoping) that my dr. says I can bike at
10 weeks post surgery. I'm at just over 6 weeks now. I have my next appt.
on 8/27, which will be just about 9 weeks. He should be able to tell from
the x-ray how I'm doing. I have to say that the past 6 weeks has flown by.
I initially feared I might be really depressed but I think the pool running
saved me.

Delivered three books on foot this morning to Rocky Hill. Total trip was about

Hot.

Mike, your continued workouts sound good. Your fall on 8/24/19 does
seem only like a few months ago. I am again toying around with
'7-days a week' running much like you were/are so good at. No
promises here, but for the moment it seems to help to try for some
kind of workout even if it will be a slow run or even a walk on the
days I don't feel up to much. Slow is aok! I agree.

Tracy, I hope the healing is going well so you can get the go-ahead
for biking in early September.

I see the Garmin site is back! I don't know when they went back
online but it was good to updoad runs since July 22 with no problem
this morning.

Lee, good to chat/text briefly the other day. I really enjoy reading
your log reports. I did some searching around on my computer for one
picture I took in 2017 of a Rose Mallow flower (close up)! Found it
and wanted to share it here. I hope there was not any further damage
by that storm to your property (or to yours Tracy). It sounded like a
humdinger.

Mon 8/10 - ran 4.0 miles @ 6:37 am at 10:37 pace in Ayer. Muggy! Tue
8/11 - ran 3.0 miles @ 7:22 am at 10:12 pace in Ayer. Ditto! Wed
8/12 - ran 5.0 miles @ 7:25 am at 10:19 pace in Ayer. Same story!!

Wednesday to make up for the one that was cancelled due to the storm.

Ran 4.0 miles Thursday (11:33 pace) on woodland trail behind pond here
near the apartment -- then out to some of the [Fort] Devens military
base buildings and back. Took a rest day Friday. Worked a 10-hour
shift. Was non-stop all day with framing customers. Good but busy
day. Crashed early last night after dinner. Ran 5.32 miles with
Concord Runners out to Mattison Field this morning. Very scenic!! Was
fun chatting about the state of our country (!!) after our 'socially
distanced' run. Also celebrated Marsha's retirement. She is a
geneticist and amature astronomer. Thursday's and today's run data

I think I'm officially in a funk. I went to the pool a couple of days last
week and yesterday. It's getting hard with the new job and the weather is
now changing, making the pool water chilly. I rode my bike just back and
forth in front of my townhouse and can't understand how that is any worse
than walking on the foot or pushing down on the gas pedal in the car. I
think I'm going to make an executive decision and ride for maybe 20 min.
this weekend, as long as I don't feel any pain. If there was a crabby emoticon,
I would put that too. I feel out of shape, bigger, fatter - just yuck!
LOL Thanks for listening to my rant.

Lee, sorry to hear about the damage by your house. Wondering how much more
is going to happen in this crazy, stupid, effed up world of ours?

ceb - Thursday, August 20, 2020 at 23:19:58 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Literally falling asleep as I make this entry! Ok, Chip, you can do
this, So Tracy, I think I may have a new emoticon for you (for us)
which captures the mood you so eloquently described! But this will
have to first be presented to the Brickyarders oversight committee for
review and approval! I stole it so I may have to be go to jail, But,
if this CRABBY emoticon is ok, it can be uploaded using (less than
symbol)IMG SRC=CRB.JPG(greater than symbol). It looks like this:

I hope the inspiration returns soon Tracy. Pandemics and foot
operations and a ton of other 2020 things don't make it any easier!

Lee, I took the liberty to put this file in the .../runlog directory.
Feel free to edit, resize, delete, keep, etc.

My running this week took a big hit. I pulled my lower back 3 morning
ago literally standing in my living room raising a glass of orange
juice to my mouth. They are very heavy objects, Right? Nope! Oh
well, It is what it is. This happens about once or twice a year with
me and it is one royal effing challenge to put socks on my feet and
(of course shoes and pants), etc. I attribute it to "stress."

I walked a lot! I had a MAJOR success with my Garmin watch though!
Finally, I took the time to try to understand why it would always
increment its DISTANCE display up to only 0.99 and then to 0.00 miles.
Anyway, it all had to do with the 'LAP KEY' setting being reset to
'OFF' and adjusting it from 0.5 miles (for each "lap") to 1 mile.

On one of my walks, I was pleased to see (for the first time in
literally years) a display of 1.01 miles after a PACE readout at the
mile. It's the little things in life. I really should have looked
into this matter a looong time ago, but didn't.

I ran this morning super slow. The back pain was at about a 6 but I
think it helped to free things up a bit. We'll see this week.

total 21.31 miles for the week

can avoid putting picture files on your server. For now I will share
some pictures taken on my walk(s) using the old method.

Chip, the emoticon is perfect! All in favor...

So I biked about 7.5 miles on the rail trail without incident. I will most
likely be riding more over the weekend.

A special session of the Brickyarders oversight committee met at 1:15 PM today
and approved CRB.JPG. It appears on the form we use. Copy and Paste w/ abandon.

ceb - Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 16:54:47 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

My thanks go to the Brickyarders oversight committee for rapidly
accepting it validating the crabby emoticon. Funny to read we all now
have the power to use it "with abandon." Then again, why not?!!
These are trying times and feeling crabby is accepted "here." Hmmm.
I am probably over-thinking this but maybe we need another "equal and
opposite" emoticon to capture the following kind of workout.

Joyful
Peaceful
Inspirational
Memorable
Relaxed

AND

AOK as it is / was

I will leave the creation of this open for others to look into also.

Maybe we each could send these to the BOC separately and then at some
point the committee could have us vote virtually on all of them. The
BOC has the final say however).

This, like certain other emoticons, it probably not one we would use
very frequently. It's also not an easy assignment since it contains 6
attributes we probably all have experienced at one time or another,
but seldom all together. Needless to say, using this emoticon would
probably indicate you had one hell of a good time out there -- NO
MATTER how fast or slow you were. This emoticon is also not one
"confined" to running. Other workout modes are perfectly acceptable!

We can at least know such an emoticon exists and that we are
"reserving" it for ourselves -- and that those good days ARE out
there. We should also NOT be afraid to use it if inclined to boast of
these sometimes subtle and serene workout moments.

One further note about this assignment: Those on the Brickyarders
Review Board (or BOC) are encouraged to participate -- since they of course
have all "been there" and "done that" with respect to the vast running
emoticon landscape.

OK, so I walked yesterday (Friday) here in the park. It was not
really a workout per se. I helped a woman look for her son's wallet
which he evidentially had dropped (lost). She said it had 'a lot' of
money in it. Maybe some honest soul will take it to the Parks and Rec
office or police. The map for this run is kind of amusing because it
began at 4:20 pm and ended at about 7:30 pm!!! I ended up having
dinner with my neighbor Wendy and we talked for along time outside her
place, too. It was at 7:30 pm (or so) when I stopped my watch!!

Ran 4.65 miles with Concord Runners to 'Battle Road Trail' this

tlz - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at 11:29:43 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Wow, I'm MIA for a couple of days and another wonderful emoticon appears!
LOL I rode 12 miles on the bike on Sat. My foot fell fine during and after
the ride. But on Sunday, it started to hurt and on Mon. too. :( I got a
little freaked out that I damaged it. Luckily, by Tuesday, it felt much
better. I pool ran for an hour on Tuesday. Ironically, that workout is
worthy of the designation. It just felt really good
listening to my mp3 music and in my own little world. The water was the
perfect temp. too.

I had to change my dr. appt. from Thursday to next Monday due to my work
schedule so not sure if I should bike again this weekend - maybe not 12 miles
at a time - or wait for the official okay? Does the Board want to weigh
in on this too? (Disclaimer: I may or may not listen.) LOL

tlz - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at 11:38:48 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Addendum: OMG, how could I have forgetten? I bought a road bike on Mon.
It's a 2016 Womens Cannondale but barely used. I was reluctant to spend
$1100 on a new bike, since this is a new sport for me and I may revert back
to mostly running, if possible. I spent $500 but she threw in a bike rack
for my car and Shimano pedals (which I can't use but can sell). Not sure
what y'all know about road bikes. Vanessa and Jason have been patiently
trying to educate my ignorant self. Anyway, my bike has the Claris groupset,
which is the bottom of the barrel, in terms of no respectable cyclist would
be caught dead with a bike equipped with this. HA HA HA. So Vanessa insisted
that I have to name my bike - she is a true bike enthusiast. So I came up
with Clarisse, which I think is super fitting. Funny, I did remark before
going to look at the bike that I didn't want shitty Claris and, yet, now
I have Clarisse. :) I still can't figure out how to post pics on here so
I may send to a more capable Brickyarder.

lrb - Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at 20:11:38 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I've been slackin' in both the doin' and the loggin' departments. But it's
of course so fine to hear from Princess Tray ('member Princess Tray?) and
of course pleased she put our new emoticon to work.

And, yeah, posting pix here is a pain in the butt but (how many times have
you been given the opportunity to butt together but and butt?) sure ... email
Clarisse (love the name) and the technical staff w/ do the rest.

I did do 4 miles at 21 minute pace today.

Who knows, maybe Tray'll give us a or two in the near future.

ceb - Friday, August 28, 2020 at 17:39:14 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Wow. I think I'm right up there with the slacker/no-logging award
this week.

Great to see the Board has approved (and created!) the Joyful Peaceful
Inspirational Memorable & Relaxed emoticon AND to see Tracy has used it
already! Nice bike Tracy! It looks like a beauty. How could it not
be with a name like Clarisse? :) Great choice. Oh, before I
forget ... If you have yet to bike 12 miles this weekend, I will throw
in my two cents here on that decision.

As much as I sometimes question a doctor's advice I would say err on
the side of caution with that ride. Maybe a shorter ride or a slower
ride (for now) would be safer. He may see something that will warrant
a long steady ride -- or maybe not. If you trust his advice, then you
might wait until Monday to hear what he has to say. Either way, I
would say don't risk hurting the operation's healing. A slow, short
ride might be safer.

Weekly Summary (last week) was 10.18 miles (ugh...)

Since my last log entry, I've run twice. My lower back is better from
the pull 12 days ago.

Each day it seems to be getting a little better. Not perfect, but
much better pain-wise. Running seems to help rather than hurt it.

Ran 3 miles on Monday 8/24. Pace was 10:57/mile.

Chip, injuries suck. Be careful.

So guess what? I'm giddy with excitement. I've been cleared to not only
bike but the doctor said I can start running. :0 I thought I had to wait
another 2-3 weeks. He said to start slow - like a mile - and if that feels
okay, gradually build. I almost fell over when he said I could start training
for a marathon. LOL Luckily (or not), there are no races to train for so
that will be a positive influence on keeping me in simmer mode. Yay! Yay!
Yay! I made it!
