Last day of the convention so I only ran 4.2 miles this morning. Easy run
at about a 9:45 pace. Stayed within the city so the Garmin info was very
unreliable. Nice temps(about 32f) and just a nice morning of exercise. Did
27 miles total for my stay in Chicago.

Did not run yesterday but "ran" about 1/2 mile from work in Cambridge hoping
to catch the 6:35 pm train in time. Strained my left calf to a point where
I felt it pull slightly about 2 blocks before the station.  Damn! 
Today it was sore and resting it (and continuing to bike instead) seems to
be the best medicine for a few days or maybe more.  Was hoping to try out
my Garmin (when it arrives) on a better note, but may do some real slow jogs
to break it (and me) in instead.  Oh well.  Not to worry... This too shall
pass!

Gave my legs a rest today. While in Chicago I ran 27 miles during the six
days so today is a day off. I may do a major long run this weekend as part
of my prep for Hyannis but still planning the weekend. I did sign up for
the Quarter Marathon in March. Does anyone know if the People's Forest run
is on? I've heard conflicting reports and would like to run it if possible.

Ran just 3 today. Ran 9.41 on Wednesday. 

Mike - Peoples Forest will take place and will probably be on January 15th.
I've been in correspondance w/ Tom Buckley and he wants to make sure it does
not conflict w/ the Meriden Tradition Run which Lea tells me will not be
an issue as it January 29th this year.

Tracy and I are going to duke it out this year ... all 17.134 miles.

Looks like Tracy WILL run Tinsel tomorrow. My Linda will be going so Ben
and Andrew can hang out w/ her.

Chip - take care of that calf. Christopher Martins needs you healthy. Plus,
there's a Christmas Party after and we can't have you hobbling around.

And yeah, come on Brickyarders. Log. Log. Log.

I caught a bad cold. Mostly a head cold and everything I read said if "its
above the shoulders then go for a run". I did. Ran 5 miles this morning even
though I planned a major long one as part of my training. The cold didn't
bother me and ended with an average pace of 9:22. Some hills. It would have
been a great morning for a long one though. If the cold is better tonight
I might try a long one tomorrow but I have to get it done before Christmas.
I was going to do Blue Back Mitten run tomorrow but we have a party in Middletown
at 1pm and the timing doesn't work. I'll sign up for something in the next
few weeks though.

Thanks Rose! I'm sure you remember me belly-aching about not ever winning
a trophy.  What a nice surprise today!  I owe a great big thanks to Linda
for watching Ben and Andrew so that I could run the race.  Although I have
to say that Lee made the hill sound like Mt. Kilimanjaro!  LOL!  It wasn't
that bad really - I just have to learn how to sprint up hills.  Good luck

Ran with my Garmin 305 this morning for the first time.  Discovered my left
calf did not recover from the four block "race" to catch the train Wednesday
evening in Cambridge.  I had to stop my run this morning at the .43 mile
mark due to some noticeable soreness that would have gotten worse in the
next few seconds if I'd continued.  Stopped my watch and realized I'd need
to rest from running for at least a week to see if it heals.  See details

Hi everyone - I had a very busy week, sorry for the absent logging. I logged
in 32 miles this week, plus a pilates and yoga class. Long run was 13 miles
at Brickyard on Saturday. Hubby dropped me off at 11:00am - he headed to
the mall to do some Christmas shopping. Took it nice a slow and finished
in 2:11:32. Congrats to everyone who raced (and placed) this past weekend!
I am running Christopher Martin's in New Haven this Sunday. Applications

Tray...Share away. Someone sent it to me.  Today I tried running for the first
time in 3 days. Still sick  but I thought I was getting better. I was very
wrong. Even though the runny nose and coughing is better I was very weak.
I'm in Pittsburgh on a business trip and headed out hoping to do 3-4 miles.
After about a half mile it was apparent I was still too weak so I ended a
little over a mile. I'll reassess tomorrow and decide if I try again. Terrible

Rainy but warm run - 6.34 miles/9:28 pace. I know, weird distance but it took
me exactly an hour so I stopped the watch then.  Horrendous headache today
but no cold symptoms.  Mike, sorry to hear you are under the weather.  Hope
it passes quickly.

Lea, the Cheshire Half looks good but I'm not sure when the ultra will be
in 2012.  Last year is was on April 23rd.  Then again, run 3 marathons in
2 mos., why not run a half one week after an ultra?

Speaking of marathons, four more days til Roxbury.  Lee has graciously (or
foolishly) agreed to run the last 2 loops with me, which is a total of 7
miles.  Just kidding about the foolish part, Lee. :)

Back in the saddle! Much better run today. Did 5 miles at an average pace
of 9:11. I started feeling better on the flight back last night even though
I still have a cough and stuffed up sinuses. No problems during the run.
Longest run since Saturday. All this chatter about the Worcester Marathon
and Cheshire Half has peaked my interest. I may consider both. Is Brickyard
on for Saturday?

mile run.  I've had a raging headache for about 3 days straight and finally
got to the chiro. today.  When he cracked one side of my neck, I swear it
crunched in like 6 different places.  So I feel better but not 100%.  It's
only 6 now so I may actually jump on the "dreadmill" if I get motivated.
Did anyone watch that video I emailed?  I thought it was pretty funny.

I did 12 at a good pace. I owe Lester an apology. He said 10 sounded like

six mile mark. So his longest run ever is now 12. Lester's house is about
100 meters off the path. I read the log and note that Lee Bradley has cut

I went out for runs yesterday and today but both were short due to time constraints.
Had busy schedules early in the morning. Each was 4 miles and at leisurely
paces in the 9-10/mile range. Good basic workout. I'll get some 8+milers
in through the weekend. Looks like next week I'll plan a long training run
of 15-20 miles or even longer. I want one completed well before my marathon.
The People's Forest 17 mile run will be good timing as that is 5 weeks before
the Hyannis Marathon. I can taper easily after that.

you may screw yourself up for the rest of the race.  Just sayin'...  At least
wait until you're over the first hill!

Tray...In NJ near Princeton(Ewing to be exact). At 5:30 it was 60 but getting
windy. By the time I left for my appointment at 8am it was near 45. I would
love the challenge of a hilly 10 miles but can't tomorrow due to relatives
coming down. I'll probably do 8-10 in the morning. Could do Brickyard but
must be done early like by 10am. Maybe stay local.

I decided to run the "hills" in Burlington since I couldn't run Norfolk. Did
10 miles(10:10 pace) that includes 4 major hills that are very steep inclines
between 3 and 51/2 miles. Change in elevation during that piece is over 400ft.
Its a nice country run away from most houses, etc. Check out the elevation
chart on the Garmin map.

13 miles at Brickyard today is 2 hours, 20 minutes. Ran towards Avon/Simsbury
for a change. Lots of branches down on the side of the trail, and very isolated
- I think I passed 4 people the entire run. After the run i took my stinky
self to Trader Joes and spent way too much money! Note to self - do not go
into a grocery store right after a long run. Hope everyone had a good run
at Norfolk. Don't know if I'll be at Brickyard Dec. 24.

6.6 miles around Manchester Airport in New Hampshire. Snowing. Not much accumulation

Ran 8 w/ Judi, Rose, Tray and Linda yesterday @ Highcrest. Looks like a few
folks can make it to Brickyard this Saturday. I'll be out of town starting
Friday or Saturday and away for a week. Going to Watkins Glen to run the
hills and celebrate Christmas. I'm impressed not only by Mike's consistent
running (it seems all over the place!) but by his expertise in posting his
Garmin maps etc. I've replaced our very impressive race calendar with the
2012 edition ... 3 races on it. Joe Vailonis 8 miler, Peoples Forest 8.5
/ 17 and Tradition Run. See you all January 1. 2012 ... the year Tray breaks
4 and everybody has a PR in some distance.

Back to warm weather with a 6 miler at almost 50f. Ran a little faster today.
On Saturday I'm thinking of a long run where I incorporate the Brickyard
trail. I live about 4 miles from one section so I might start an early run
and get down to Brickyard. I can catch up to the group and then head back
home. I may do a total of 20 miles Saturday if all goes well.

I thought the elevation profile was particularly cool today. Very symmetric.
Out and back runs are like this!



Ran longish today. Borrowed Linda's mp3 player and listened to Chariots,
Violin Concerto in D (Tchaikovsky), Eagles and several other things captured
from YouTube. Learned something pretty cool about my Garmin 305 which Mike,
Tray and other owners might want to try. Put the watch in what I call "map
mode." In this mode you see the route you are running. As you cover each
mile a little number appears along the route indicating which mile you're
completed. The thing I like about this is if you are doing an out and back,
when you are on your return trip you see the old mile markers and thus get
a feeling for how many miles you not only have gone but have left to go.
In my case, when I saw the 4 mile mark, I also saw the 12 mile mark. When
I saw the 15 mile mark, I saw the 1 mile mark. I think the "firmware" must
get automatically updated when you hook your watch up to Garmin Connect because
I don't remember seeing this exact feature before.

Big one today. 21 miles. Avg pace 10:14 and total time of 3h35m. Mostly flat
course down through Queen Street in Southington then back up through Plainville
and Farmington. Almost made it to the Brickyard course but I would have ended
up doing a full marathon if I went that far. I was tempted. I had a sore
lower calf down to the achilles yesterday and worry if it would be safe to
run. It was a little sore throughout and now feels the same as it did yesterday.
I'm taking tomorrow off so I'll focus on taking care of it. Felt good to
get a solid long run in and it was the longest since Hartford. One more of
these before the Hyannis Marathon in February. I'll be at the Joe Vailonis
Memorial race on Jan 1st then the Peoples Forest run where I will do the
full 17.

Awesome job, Mike!  Queen Street is horrible though - there is little room
on the side of the road and cars zoom by carelessly.  How far into Southington
did you run? 

I ONLY ran 12 today - 9:23 pace.  I had a negative split run, which was nice
and I incorporated some hills, which are starting to feel less strenuous
than previously.

I over did it. I have achilles tendonitis. Pain above the heel, swollen, lump,
and redness. Since my long run I've been walking very gently careful not
to stretch the area. Today is day 2 since it flared up. I believe my hills
run last week started it because I haven't done anything else out of the
ordinary. So....lots of Ibuprofen, rest, and hopefully it will only last
a few days. But I won't push it and will wait before I run again.

Semi-long, slow, fat-burning run - 10 miles/10:12 pace.

Sorry to hear about your tendinitis, Mike.  It's an annoying injury.  I had
great success with acupuncture.  I also did gentle stretches - rolled up
a towel and put it behind the sole of my foot and gently pulled forward.
The chiro. also suggested soaking ankles in ice water for 20 min. to help
with inflammation.  You could alternate days and soak them in warm water
with Epsom salt (I didn't find that as helpful, however).  My pain was right
on the heel bone and it kept moving from one side to another to dead center.
You're wise to be cautious.  If the pain starts to move up the actual tendon,
you have to be careful of a rupture.  Hope it gets better for you soon.

Looks like I won't be logging in any miles until Monday - between houseguests
and now an unexpected trip down to VA for a funeral starting tomorrow afternoon
I haven't had a chance to get any exercise in. I won't be at Brickyard on
Saturday, but hope to possibly make the trip up on New Year's day. Hope everyone
had a wonderful holiday weekend!

Tried my first run after 31/2 days of rest because of my achilles tendinitis.
No pain today so I figured I would give it a try. Ran/walked 3 miles as a
test to see how it felt. I went slow and only on flat roads. Barely flexed
my right foot so as not to stress the achilles. Definitely not 100% yet but
I did OK. Of the 3 miles I ran almost 2. In the last hour since finishing
it still feels OK with a little soreness. I'll take tomorrow off and give
it another test on Friday.

Much better today. Leg felt OK so I ran a slow 4 miles. 10:17 pace but considering
I couldn't walk on my right leg 4 days ago I'm happy. Did two small hills.
Slow times but don't want to damage the achilles.

6 miles with a pace of 10:01/mile. I'm running the Joe Vailonis Memorial on
Sunday so I'll skip Brickyard on Saturday. But will be available next week.

Looks like everyone is sucking wind on the runs this week.  Although, Lee
hasn't reported on his running in Watkins Glen yet.  I did not run on Tues.
and Wed., as I felt a cold coming on AGAIN and wasn't up to it.  This time
the congestion set in so I have an annoying head cold.  Yesterday I ran 6
miles at a 10:12 pace.  Not sure if I will run or row today.  Tomorrow Brent
and I are meeting at Brickyard at 8 a.m. for 12-14.  Looks like everyone
else is unavailable.

Lea, sorry you had to head out of town for a funeral.  Sad at any time of
the year but especially during the holiday season.

It's late and we just got back but I just wanted to say I'll be joining Brent
and Tray tomorrow at Brickyard. So glad somebody's going! I have not be a
slouch this week. I ran every day except today and my runs varied from 3
miles to 15. Looking forward to joining Mike T. and Rose and anybody else
at Joe V. on Sunday in Rocky Hill. Happy New Year!

I thought I posted this earlier but maybe I didn't hit the submit button?
Anyway, I didn't run Mon. or Tues. due to a cold coming on.  Unfortunately,
I didn't beat it this time and I have some annoying head congestion.  I ran
6 miles yesterday at a 9:49 pace and did the rowing machine today.  Brent
and I are meeting at Brickyard tomorrow at 8 a.m. for 12-14.
