Couldn't figure out how to get this entry in Dec. since it was my last run
in 2012. 5 miles/8:59 pace. 2 miles were 8:20-ish. My yearly mileage says
1,999.84 mi so I am claiming the highly coveted 2K for the year. There have
been numerous times when I stopped my watch to be exact, yet run a little
extra.
Tomorrow's race should be interesting. Probably ran too fast today and definitely
drank too many rum and cokes. Hitting the hay now at 1 a.m. 10 min. pace?
LOL
tlv - Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 20:39:58 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
First of all, when I wrote on the log last night, I forgot that I didn't upload
all of this week's runs onto Garmin Connect. So my 2012 annual mileage is
actually 2,023.09 miles.
For the 4.8 mile race today, I managed an 8:45 pace. Not sure I would've
been able to do that for a full 8 miles, though the road course was hilly
and the meadow would've been flat. Lee and I ran a tiny bit into the meadow
and both nearly fell as we were turning around. If I wore my "screw" running
shoes, I would've been okay for the meadow. I will remember this for next
year, as re-routing to the road seems to happen a lot with this race.
Speaking of snow-covered terrain, it looks like Brickyard may be impassable,
at least for this Sat. So we need to come up with some other areas to hold
a group run. Lee suggested Roger's Orchards in Southington. It's a 5+ mile
loop on the road. There's also the Apple Harvest course (5 miles). The
problem is that we would have to do multiple loops to get in a long run.
Does anyone know the Hartford Marathon course well enough to pick out a
segment where there isn't too much traffic? I was wondering about the long
out and back section (somewhere around mile 13) but, honestly, I don't know
how to get there and what normal, daily traffic is like. Perhaps someone
should post on the HTC FB page and inquire as to where others run when there's
snow on the ground.

Nice little race today at Joe Vailonis. Good time. It's nice to say I came
in 7th! It's not nice to say there were 8 runners! But still fun. Burlington
has some nice neighborhoods with quiet streets but most have extreme repeating
hills so a group run may not suit all. What about the Iron horse area in
Simsbury and the back streets where the half marathon is held? Flat and little
traffic yet you could put together a good 6-8 mile loop. We could park at
the park on Iron Horse boulevard and there are bio facilities at Dunkin Domuts
and maybe even a port-o-potty. Or what about Meriden in the park?

Ran from my place to the start of the Newington Scottish Rite 5K course,
ran the course (very hilly @ the start) and then ran home. A bit over 8 miles
at a 11:36 pace. Very cold out (21°F) (as per Mike).
Everybody's ideas of where to run this and future Saturdays when Brickyard
is under snow are great. I'm going to email Barbara and Dave and ask them
to take the job of being our official GMs (Greenway Monitors) and report on
the conditions so we can plan accordingly.
I think Mike's idea to run the Iron Horse Half course is a good one to try
first. Lea, map something out for Meriden for future ref. Tracy's Southington
5 mile Apple Harvest loop and my idea to do the Rogers Orchards loop are
good too.
Let's do some experimenting this Winter!

Took the day off completely. Man, it is cold out there!
Mike, the Iron Horse route sounds great. Do you have a physical address
to plug into the GPS? Should we meet where the park is located - can't remember
the name but it has a big playground.
I don't think there is anywhere suitable to run on the actual streets of
Meriden. We could try Castle Craig at some point but it's only 3 miles up
- so 6 miles total. Not sure how many times people would want to run up
it to get in a long run. It would be quite an assault on the quads!
Speaking of Castle Craig, Todd pointed out yesterday that the Meriden Tradition
Run is the same day as People's Forest this year. :(

8 miles/10:28 pace. Went out at 3 p.m. - warmer than this morning, but still
cold! Had to pee at mile 3.5 but toughed it out until the end. Didn't feel

I'm game for about 16 miles.
Mike, the Disney half sounds awesome!

Addendum to my earlier log entry: Forgot to mention that Linda came up with
an address to plug into the GPS for Sat. - 85 Pent Road in Simsbury. There
is a big parking lot there and hopefully, we'll see each other as we enter
it. I believe Lee said the start time is 7:30 a.m.

Looking at my last year's Iron Horse Garmin record, the race starts just north
of the Phelps Lane / Iron Horse Blvd intersection. This is south of Pent
Rd. I think the place we all gather after the race is near this. You can
still use Linda's 85 Pent Rd for your GPS but we'll have to go a bit south
to get to where we'll start our run.

Did almost 16 w/ Tray, Brent, Mike and Barbara at the Iron Horse course. The
playground / parking lot area is right where Tray claimed it would be so
we now have a GPS address we can count on, namely 85 Pent Road. The breakdown
of distances covered is 8 Barbara, 10 Mike, 16- Lee, 16 Tray, 20? Brent.
The last number is in question because 1. Brent's Garmin died 2. we didn't
follow him in our cars to verify it 3. he never uploads anything anyway so
we'll never know.
Brent did however tell us he is updating his Living Will by adding something
along the lines of "pull the plug if I don't run 5 days in a row and have
been hooked up to a resuscitator."
Tray invited all Brickyarders to head to NJ 4 months from now and cook omelets
for her during her 100 miler. Lee said he might show up.
Happy anniversary Tray and Barry!!!
Oh, almost forgot. Mike is getting a 1 day sex change next Saturday, changing
his name to Ashley and running the 13.1 Disney Half.
Finally, Lee and Tray encouraged Brent to log more than once per century
and Lee encouraged Tray to click the link under Sonic the Cat more than once
per century.
tlv - Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 17:35:32 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
As Lee stated, logged 16 miles - pace was 10:57. Brent ran exactly .5 to
the end of the road and was heading back to the parking lot when I drove
by him. I yelled out my window that he was only getting a mile added to
his mileage today. :)
Lee, just to clarify - 85 Pent Road DOES NOT get you to the playground.
I don't know what address to plug into the GPS to get to the parking lot
at the playground. I found it by chance when I turned onto Ironhorse Blvd.
85 Pent Road took me to St. Mary's church - so scratch that address for
the GPS (unless you want to pray before the run). I think we all know how
to get there now anyway.

The joy (obsession?) of running has returned. I have run 14 of last 16 days.
I did 6.5 spring miles this morning to end 43.6 mile week. I was initially
proud of my excellent start to the new year then noticed that I ran 43.8
miles for the first week in 2012 so I am actually going backwards.
High fives to Mike for recommending Simsbury. Excellent route and little
traffic.
The early rumor is that Lee, Tracy and I will go at least 18 miles at Brickyard
next Saturday.

Did not run today but having seen Mr. Stratton posting here I could not resist

the Uncle Sam post that brought you over? Anyway, Linda wanted to leave pre-next
Saturday to guarantee that our Florida trip will include a couple of days
w/ both Rose and w/ her brother but I'm sure 18 starting at 7 AM from
Brickyard will get us leaving here by 11 AM, enuf to get us pretty far

Game on!
Mike, that Arctic race looks absolutely sick. I can't believe people do
that. How do they even make it through the snow? It's a shame there is
no Slackin' Half in CT.
We'll have to see if Brickyard is clear by Sat. Lee, if you and Linda need
to leave for Fla., you don't have to run 18 miles. You have nothing on the
upcoming race schedule which necessitates a training run at that distance.
No sense in needlessly stressing Linda out! Plus, I'm sure she'll want
you to shower before hitting the road. :O

9.5 miles at Roger's Orchards - 10:18 pace. Wanted to do 2 loops but didn't
have enough time so did a partial 2nd loop and then turned back to the parking
lot. I'm not sure the route is a good one for a group run. The roads are
very narrow and when there are cars on the road, only 1 person can fit.
I actually stopped running and stood way over to the side of the road at
one point ready to jump into the snow due to an asshole driver who was driving
way too close. If there are several of us and we need to keep running single
file every time a car comes, it could get pretty annoying and may not be
the safest bet. I have no idea how many cars will be out in that area on
Sat. morning - probably not too much early but if we're out there for a few
hours, it's bound to pick up.
I was mildly encouraged when I called Cheshire Parks and Rec. to find out
whether they plow their trail. The woman told me that Cornwall to Higgins
Road is cleared. And when I thought it was too good to be true, she proceeded
to tell me that it is .95 miles. Hey, might be good practice for me - in
terms of getting used to monotonous running around a 1 mile loop. :P

Joy of Running Returns to Brent

Well despite a couple of errors, today's run turned out well. First mistake
- left my Garmin at home. No problem - the loop is 8.5 miles long and the
out and back to the end of Iron Horse is .5. So 2 loops and 1 out and back
= 18 miles. Simple, right? Yes, until the second mistake... Brent and Tray
take a wrong turn, adding some unplanned distance. When we realized our
mistake, we turned around and got back onto the loop. After we finished,
I drove to the extra section we added on and clocked the mileage. We went
.8 the wrong way so 1.6 extra miles. So to sum up the day, we ran 19.6 miles
in about 3 1/2 hours - average pace 10:40/10:45. If I had known we were
so close to 20, I would've added another .4 miles. Oh well.

Great time at the Disney Half Marathon. Amazing from start to finsh. Fantastic
show pre race, during race, and post race. The crowds for the first 2 miles
were thick and we frequently had to run on the grass along the highways.
It thinned out at about 3 miles and we went through the Magic Kingdom. Fun
running through it and through the castle but was slow at times due to crowds.
Once back on the highway to Epcot we were able to pick up speed. Disney characters,
dance shows, even gospel singers lined the course for entertainment. I never
saw so many port-o-potties before. At least 500 near the start. On the course
they had port-o-potties with big numbers on the doors. Aids would yell which
numbers were open so no one had to check if free. Great crowds as well. I

There are patches of bare pavement on the trail. Maybe another few days of
warm temperatures will melt the remaining snow and ice. I will check later
in the week. Took a day off from running today.

Mike, glad you like the book. I still recommend a walk/run pattern for at
least the beginning of the 31 miler. Even though it's only 5 miles more
than a marathon, there's still a big risk for bonking if you go out too aggressively.
The last thing you want to do is bonk at mile 20 and have 11 more miles
to tough out! For both of the Lake Waramaug ultras that I ran, I found the
walk breaks along with eating solid food to be very energizing. I seriously
felt better physically during both ultras than I ever have in a marathon.
Barb, I think today was the end of the 50 degree weather for awhile. My
backyard patio took forever to melt but it is finally clear.
Tomorrow is a complete rest day for me.

8 miles on the dreadmill! Took me 1 1/2 hours, as I varied my pace and incline
and walked the last .5 mile. I succeeded in breaking up the monotony though
- it actually wasn't that bad. I banged the top of my hand really hard twice
on the rail and now have a purplish blue goose egg on my hand.
Lea, congrats on the new baby! I saw your FB post a few days ago but before
that, I didn't know. Who's getting a baby brother - Parker? Hope all goes

Reach The Beach Relay Race in September.....Hey Brickyarders....I heard about
this race from my brother-in-law up in New Hampshire. Sounds interesting.
It is teams of runners that run overnight for various distances. Total of
200 miles covered and a special ultra section of 33 miles. Check out the
link below. Anyone interested in forming a team? I see others in HTC are
talking about it as well. I'd consider it if others are interested.

Sickity sick sick. No running Tues, Wed, or Thurs. Am going to try a little

baby to smother in kisses! Tracy - yes, my nephew Parker, at 16 months old,
is a new big brother :)
tlv - Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 00:39:08 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
I couldn't bare to walk outside today - too cold. I walked 3 miles on the
treadmill - just under a 14 min. pace. Also did some Ab Ripper X. Sadly,
I had a difficult time with some of the exercises I used to be able to do.
Guess I've been ignoring my abs for too long!
So I did not send out an offical "Call to Brickyarders" but it looks like
Brent, Barb, Mike, and I are a go for tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. in Simsbury.
Lea, sorry you are sick! Hopefully, it's just a cold so you can meet your

Lee, good luck to you and Rose and Erika on Sun.!

tlv - Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 17:58:19 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
I ran 20 miles/10:56 pace. I think I'm obsessed! My legs were sore but I
didn't care. After I finished the first loop with Barb and Mike, I started
inserting walk breaks to sustain another 9 miles. I thought it was rather
chilly today. I had on 3 layers and never got hot. The wind picked up at
times and, of course, it was never at my back - always in my face. Slackin'
emailed a bunch of excuses for standing us up - he was out late, the dog
ate his running shoes, yadda, yadda, yadda. Since he's racing next weekend,
he was probably wise to skip a long run this week. Although, if you're Lee
Bradley, you ALWAYS run a minimum of 3 hours 2-3 days before you race. :P
bek - Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 18:06:54 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
I enjoyed the run this morning. I did 8.5 miles with Tracy and Mike. My left
ankle was hurting after about 6 miles. This is what happens when I increase
my mileage-the aches and pains come out. I thought the weather was good,
but the wind made it cold at times. Good luck tomorrow, Lee and Rose!

This was the second Sunday (after running 20 or near 20 miles on Sat.) in

Still sick :(
Only managed 12 miles last week.
I am debating signing up for the Hartford Marathon. Question - I am going
to Germany for 2 weeks in August (possibly Aug. 19-30). If I follow the same
training plan as 2011 one of the weeks I'm away is a 20 mile training run.
I highly doubt I will be running during vacation. Just country-hopping and
eating/drinking whatever the heck I want! Should I still sign up for the
race?
tlv - Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 00:36:42 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
S.A.S. run - that's my new acronym, which stands for "slow as shit." I'd
say it pertains to any runs over an 11 min. pace. I ran 5 miles/11:20 pace.
After yesterday's run, I felt like I was running in place today. LOL
Lea, sorry to hear you are still sick. Regarding your marathon question,
I think it's entirely possible to go away in Aug. and still have enough time
to be prepared by Oct. I would still recommend running somewhat on vacation
but you can probably rearrange your long runs so you don't have to do them
while you're away.

I'm not looking forward to running later in 25-30 mph wind gusts. Maybe
I should stop in Target for one of those full face thingies that skiiers

a lot. I think I'll just use a scarf.

WAY TO COLD to be running outside! I don't want to get sick again.
tlv - Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 00:10:09 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)
Wanted to do 7 today but not enough time before getting the kiddies so I did
6 at a 9:00 min. pace. I actually didn't think the cold was that bad. I
had on 3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, a headband and a hat over it, and thick
gloves. I joked with Barry and told him that I might wear 2 pairs of underwear.
Ironically, my butt cheeks were cold, even with the 2 pairs of pants! :)
The only other part that was cold was my face, as I didn't bring a scarf.
I have to get the oil in my car changed soon so I told Barry I would drop
it off at the Midas in town and then run home. We both laughed because it
just sounded funny. I told him that was another benefit to running. Then
he said I would take it to a Midas 3 towns away just so I could run long.
LOL

I took yesterday off and did about 4 miles today. The cold didn't bother me.

Semi S.A.S. run - 6 miles/10:27 pace. I had to pee so badly by mile 3 but
there were too many cars on the road so I cut the run a little short and

People's Forest 17 mile/two loop was a great time. Not a good finish time
but it was fun to participate this year since I was injured last year. Time
was 2:57:56 with an average pace of 10:35. There must have been something
in the water after the first loop because if you look at the per mile pace
I went from an average pace of 9:40 during the first loop to an average of
10:50 during the second loop. My legs were tired and rightly so because total
mileage for the week is 55. No days off. I'm taking Monday off. I'll have

No ice on the road though, which was very non-Tradition-esque. I have some

Today I did a SAS or STS run primarily because of the wind and rain. Did

that on a road without streetlights a wet skunk blends in nicely with a wet
