tlv - Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 21:31:33 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

1st day of June already! Brent and I ran a few miles before the 5K today.
I got in 4 miles/10:47 pace and was soaking wet by the start of the race.
My time was 24:53 - I was pretty taxed trying to stay under 25 min. We
did 2 loops around the high school in Cromwell. Much of the surface was
wet grass, which I find somewhat hard to run fast on. There was also a section
in the woods - a fairly flat dirt path with roots clearly marked with spray
paint. Only a couple of small sections of pavement and at the finish, we
did one lap around the track.

So I was looking at my training schedule and didn't see any yellow for several
days (I highlight rest days in yellow). I've run for the past 11 days
straight and didn't even realize it. I think all that streaking talk on
FB entered my mind on a subconscious level or something. LOL Anyway, tomorrow
will be day 12. I hope to get in 10 miles, which will make a 55 mile week
for me. How appropriate that Kate Stoker invited me to join the Crash and
Burn Ultrarunners group. I may very well be on my way! :)

MCT - Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 16:06:08 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Iron Horse Half Marathon. Time of 2:12 which is not good considering I did
1:54 last year but the hot conditions took a toll. I never run during the
day so this was my hottest run of the year. Many runners were dropping especially
near the end. There were 6 runners down just at the finish. KC Klett, being
a fireman, received an alert on his phone put out about the emergency. Lee
finished ahead of me but I don't have his time. Saw Barb, Dave, and Peter
Hawley there today as well. This is my 6th Half Marathon of 2013. I'm going
to shoot for at least 10 this year.

I thought I would get up early and beat the heat but was out late last night
(Barry's band was playing) so didn't have the energy to run this morning.
I waited until 5:30 p.m. and it was actually pretty decent out. The sun
went behind the clouds every so often and there was an occasional breeze.
I got in 10 miles/9:51 pace. Total weekly mileage: 54.5 miles (forgot about
a 5.5 miler I did during the week, usually like to even out the total).

Kudos to Mike and Lee for toughing out a half marathon in stifling conditions.

MCT - Monday, June 3, 2013 at 10:41:00 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Did an easy 5 miles at 11:15 pace. In the rain but much cooler and more enjoyable.

Purrrrrrfect.

With Tray, Sri and Todd last night. I was consistently behind Tray (except
maybe the last 400 where we were really cranking and I think crossed together).
I don't have a very good Garmin record of these intervals and will have to
do better when we do the 800s next Monday. I was trying to maintain an 8
minute pace for each 400 but was a little quicker than that, especially on
the 5th or was it 6th?

Ran 6.52 at a 9:47 pace this morning with Wanda and Theresa in Wethersfield.
Cold and Windy! Wore one thin bright yellow shirt. Brrrrrrrrrr.

tlv - Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 01:16:54 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Short run today - 3.3 miles/9:11 pace. The .3 was to even out the .7 from
last night! Also did a short rowing workout.

ceb - Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 03:57:59 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Didn't run on Thursday of Friday.5/30 or 5/31. Work was busy, Didn't
have the energy at the end of the day on Friday. Went out for dinner
Friday night Pineapple fried rice with chicken. Yum.

Sat. 6/1

6.0 miles on a trails I'd not ever been on. Time 1:03:37. Pace - 10:38
Did 30 minutes of yoga before run after an afternoon nap. Did a full
body workout with appropriate # of reps. Good workout before run.
Took it slow on run. Very scenic on smooth trails. Good ascent.

Did not run on Sunday or Monday. Did a lot of work at home. Did some art
stuff. Wrote. Obsessed a bit about upcoming week at work. Rested a lot.
Watched tennis on TV. Cleaned the kitchen and Facebooked. Bed early.

Tue. 6/4

8.0 miles on roads and sidewalks. Time 1:18:50 Pace = 9:51.
Did another 30 minute set of yoga poses after getting home from work.
took a hot shower to loosen up more and went for what turned out to
be an 8 mile run at an easy pace. Right calf did not tighten during
the run. Yoga may help. Included the salute to the sun this time -
both sides. Went almost all the way to the Porter Square store.
Another 2 tenths would have done it. Got back and had a chicken,
vegetables and potato dinner. Eventful day at work involving a
"healthy, necessary and challenging confrontation" which ended well
for the most part.

Feeling a bit "off" with my running schedule although as I look at
the mileage over the last 7 days it does add up to 19.39 miles. Yoga
definitely helping. Slower pace may be good too, despite several
rest days. Wrote this without glasses which may explain
misspoilings.

5 miles last night outside. Already breaking the rules for marathon training

for 5 miles tonight.

tlv - Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 00:58:12 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

6 miles/8:45 pace. This is day 15 of running. I'm totally opposed to no

Did 2+ only yesterday and the above today. Unlike Tray, I'm very unstreaky
and having trouble getting into it. Like Lea, hoping for a dry Saturday but
Ms Andrea might pay a visit. Hoping to go longish tomorrow somewhere nice.

tlv - Friday, June 7, 2013 at 00:20:49 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I may be streaky but I'm logey as hell this week. Today is the second day
where I felt I could literally fall over from fatigue. Not sure what the
problem is - had my blood tested again a couple of weeks ago and iron level
is now in the normal range. I'm still taking a supplement until I see a
new dr. next week and she advises me on what to do. So I only ran 1.25 miles
today and walked for 3.

Lee, if we're all going long on Sat., you shouldn't really go that long tomorrow.
Of course, I'm the idiot running without breaks so maybe don't listen to
my advice. LOL I'm going to see how I feel tomorrow (and what the weather
is like) before I determine mileage.

lrb - Friday, June 7, 2013 at 03:11:51 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Not really a log post but just a message back at you Tray. Sorry to hear of
your logosity (logissitude?). Just learned that my Tuesday partners can't
join me tomorrow and am looking forward to running w/ you and others longish
on Saturday (I *really* don't care about the rain) so may take it easy and
go much shorter tomorrow. I do listen to you despite your streakitis and
am glad to see you have not lost your tendency to look out for your running
buddies. Yeah, you do need to run a bit less and I'm glad to hear you did
just that today. Anyway, let's hope we *all* are strong on Saturday and that
we see each other / run together @ Brick. I'll put something up mid-day tomorrow.
Good nite Irene. I mean Tray :)

Sorry about trashing your post Mike. I must've wiped it out when I put that
little clock in in the lower right hand corner. Ran exactly 9 at a SAS pace
of 12:12. To Maple and back. So ... as far as I can tell, Brent's talkin'
15, Lea's doing Lime Rock so won't be coming, Mike's in and will not do Lime
Rock or maybe will do Lime Rock and not Brick, Tray's thinking about Brick
and yours truly is looking forward to seeing as many of us as can come. 7
AM. Simsbury route. Will post something tonight. My sweatshirt gained 5 pounds
during my run.

tlv - Friday, June 7, 2013 at 21:27:21 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Well so much for the streak - it ends TODAY! Didn't feel like running a step
and figured out that the fastest way to ruin something you love is to make
it mandatory.

Lee, I tried your computer thing - very clever. And you even gave the total
so we didn't have to count. :)

See everybody in the AM.

MCT - Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 12:56:24 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

20. Blue sky and sun. So much for Andrea. Brent's running Celebrate West
Hartford 5K tomorrow starting at 9:30. Lea and Mike'll run the Lime Rock

LMC - Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 17:35:15 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Lime Rock Half - what a course. They described it as "moderately challenging"
and they were right. I had no expectations, and did not plan on "racing"
this course, and I did just that the first 6 miles of the race. Those were
all rolling hills with a gradual incline the whole way. Miles 6-7 were on
a dirt road that was a little wet due to the rain on Fri/Saturday. The good
thing is that is was smooth sailing miles 7-13 and I picked up the pace to
finish in 2:04:32, 9:30ish pace. First and last 1.6 miles were a lap on the
racetrack, which was cool. Good roads, nice and shaded except for the racetrack.

Race was very small, probably about 100 runners for both the half and 5k.
I would do it again. Total miles this week - 31.1.

MCT - Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 17:59:05 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Lime Rock Half Marathon. More hills than I was led to believe. First half
all up and second half obviously down. Check out the elevation chart at the

I ran a total of 5.31 miles at the RHHS track. I got there around 5 PM and
did about 2.5 at a jog pace. My 800s were close to Tray's but always slower
except maybe one of them. I never knew you could hold down the lap button
to reset it (I know, hard to believe) so my record of my 800s is screwed
up. Try as I might, she got me in the 200s as well. Mile c/d at end. All
in all, a decent workout. Sri was of course in front of us in each 800 but
only by about 4 seconds in the last 800. There was some discussion of bananas
by Mr 7:01 per mile Slackin' but neither Tray nor I went there. Next week,
mile repeats. These workouts are really good for me, us.

6.5 miles/9:51 pace. In addition to sore quads, my hamstrings are also a
bit achy. May reconsider the fast 200s for next week. It's not worth feeling
sore for 2 days after a workout - to me that means the workout was too hard.

Change of plans - I will be at Brickyard for a long run on Sat. morning.
I have to leave around 9:15 though so will probably start early again.

looking forward to a run tonight. This weekend I had way too much chardonnay,
ate grilled cheese and tomato soup at 11:30pm Saturday, and shook my groove
thang to really bad late 80's/early 90's party songs. Does that count as
cross training? ;)

168 miles in 30 days means about 39.2 miles per week. not up to Vroeginday
/ Stratton / Taricani standards but, hey, not bad.

6.34 @ 10:30 pace. took a duck / fish break mid run and saved 6 fish who'd
washed up into a dirt road puddle off a pond in Wethersfield.

have to update your Java too. Let me know if you have trouble.

12 miles with Lee; Tracy and Brent went longer and Barbara went shorter. I
then flyered about 250 cars at Hubbard Park for an upcoming 5k I'm volunteering
for. There was a Strides Against Cancer event there today.

tlv - Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 20:54:53 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

25 miles/10:41 pace. I was so thirsty today! Stopped at DD and got a bottle
of Coke Zero - thank goodness I put a couple of dollars in my pack. I drank
all the Gatorade in my backpack as well.

The trail was even more crowded on my way back to my car. Grrr. And it
was almost gridlock on the bridge near Collinsville.

bms - Sunday, June 23, 2013 at 16:31:23 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I did 19 Saturday but the run included the left calf briefly cramping four
times and during the run I consumed two full water bottles. (Fire department
at virtual dirt pile gave me a bottle).

Hydration: So I went on internet and saw hydrate the night and morning before
(sadly, the Friday night party with beer and the morning coffee doesn't count.
Post run bagels and fruit are mentioned as excellent carb. replacement.

My own recomm: re cramping - I stopped running and drank water, then because
I was far from my car, I continued at a slower pace. I ran four this morning
and calf was fine.

From now until Mid august or when ever, on longer run days I'll try to park
my car in a location where at 8/10 miles, I can grab another water bottle.
I will make a stronger effort to arrive before 7am to get in some miles at
cooler temps.

Happy first days of summer everyone.

Last night was cross training day. Walked for 1 hour on the treadmill, 3.8
mph at a 4% incline. Then did about 15 minutes of ab work. Too hot to run
outside today so I'll head to the gym for 6 miles on the treadmill after
work.

LMC - Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 11:47:23 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Brent - there is that little ice cream shop right near the dirt pile - maybe
they sell water? We can stop in next Saturday to see what they have. Also,
I think there is a coffee shop in the other direction, right after the we
run through the municipal parking lot towards Avon/Simsbury.

6 miles/9:19 pace - bright and early (6:30 am) in Jamaica, mon. Very hard
to map out a route on the resort - felt like a rat in a maze. Finally settled
on doing a horseshoe - down the road in front of the hotel, around the corner
and onto the beach. Then down the beach for about .4 miles, turn around,
and repeat.

2nd run (6:30 pm) - 3 miles back and forth on the beach, barefoot run - 10:45

Just finished dinner and feel like I need a 3rd run. :P

6.4 miles at 10:21 pace. As Lea would say...this run was a "hot sweaty mess".
Ran all through the city over to Greenwich. I am running the Nipmuck South
14 mile trail race this Sunday. I could do a short run at Brickyard if anyone

The skies look pretty dark, so I'll be heading to the gym tonight for a 6
miler. I'm in for Brickyard this Saturday - 13 miles. I'm doing the Hal Higdon
Intermediate 2 training plan, with some adjustments for my 2 weeks overseas
in August. Highly considering the Waramaug 50k in April; send along any training
plans for a fist ultra!

Wed-8 miles at night, brutal heat
Thur-4 miles am
Friday am - 4 miles easy plus 4 strides
Sat-race, 830am Northampton 4 miler

Happy running everyone,

Mike, what the heck is "Yellow Bird?" Gonna have to look that one up. Good
luck on your trail race!

Internet connection absolutely sucks in Jamaica mon! I'm very frustrated
but grateful I don't have a course to teach.

Went to the gym today, which was hot as hell, for a speed workout. I seriously
think I sweated more in the gym than I have outside in the hot, humid weather.
I struggled with the workout - probably because I was trying to run too
damn fast! I did 3 x 800s between 3:33 and 3:37 and absolutely could not
do any more. So I switched to 400s and barely eeked out 4 x 400s around
a 6:50 - 6:53 pace. My 400s on the track were more impressive - 6:40 pace,
I believe. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how my next track workout
goes, as I found the dreadmill incredibly difficult!

We befriended a family with a couple of teenagers. So one of the teens,
Eric, is a 16 year old cross-country guy. He and I (and possibly his mother)
are going for a short run in the morning. He said he can't run for too long
so I asked him if he could manage 3 miles at a 10 min. pace and he said yes
but that he would probably have to stop every so often. I told him that
it'd be great to tell my running group how I ran with a high school track
star and dropped him after 2 miles. LOL

MCT - Friday, June 28, 2013 at 10:35:27 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

5 miles in Stamford. 10:32 pace. I'll do 5 miles at Brickyard tomorrow. Need

About 8 at about 10 in Olde Wethersfield. Mike, my
friend Wanda is doing Nipmuck 14 mile trail run on Sunday too so look for
her. She's tall, reddish hair and speedy. Brent and I are doing 4 miler in
Northampton tomorrow morning so won't be there. I'll run with Brent on Sunday
at Brickyard starting @ 6:30 AM. Tray's getting a tan in Jamaica so don't
wait for her on Saturday. She'll be too busy dropping 16 year olds in the
last mile of a three mile run. Lea, looks like you're going to be the distance
queen on Saturday.

tlv - Friday, June 28, 2013 at 15:17:35 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Track boy stood me up! Apparently, my ultra-running reputation is too intimidating.
:) Actually, we ran into his mother at breakfast and she said he overslept
(likely story). We may have a rematch around 5:30 pm today.

So I lied about sweating more in the gym yesterday. This morning was BRUTAL.
I started at 7:40 (I was considerate in giving track boy a 10 min. grace
period). I seriously had trouble with 5.5 miles. Pace was 9:55. Jeez,
I hope when I get back to CT I have more encouraging runs!

tlv - Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 00:06:16 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Track boy chickened out yet again (playing soccer on the beach) so I ran with
his mom. She's a crazy exercise-aholic (7 days/week) and could easily kick
my ass w/ those Insanity exercise videos. However, she said I definitely
had her in the running dept. We ran 3.5 miles and walked a 1/2 mile. Total
mileage for the day: 9.5 miles. On target for a 47 mile week, which is not
as much of a step-down as I originally thought but still 16 miles less than
the previous week. Plus with all this damn eating, I can't afford not to
put in the high mileage!

MCT - Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 13:15:52 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Ran 6 miles at Brickyard today. Lea and Adam Osmund also ran. Adam and I did
the 6 miles but Lea went on for a long run with a target of 13 miles. Tomorrow
I'm running the Nipmuck South 14.1 mile trail race. I consider it a training
race in preparation for the Vermont50 in September. I have no expectations.

LMC - Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 14:34:13 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Met Mike and new guy Alan at 7am at Brickyard. ran 3 with them before they
turned around. i did amtotal of 13 miles in 2:17:00. For some reason the
last 4 miles were horrible. I looked like I jumped in the pool! Good luck
to Mike tomorrow in the trail run.

lrb - Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 16:28:31 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Brent, Sri and I ran the 4 around the 4th today in Northampton. A guy I also
know, Patrick Pezzati and his speedy son Gram ran. Bob Dacey ran too. Everyone
just named placed and got $15 and $20 gift certs to the Northampton Running
company which was right across from the start. Sri ran 28:30 and said his
slowest ever at this race was a 27 something 7 years ago ... so he was disappointed.
Imagine being disappointed w/ a 28:30. Brent was too with a 29 something.
He wanted sub-28. One unfortunate thing: 2 people took a wrong turn early
in the race and about 18 others followed them. They were all disqualified
(and *very* disappointed). Their misstep helped the rest of us place. Chris
Dickerson and Jeff (don't know last name) made the right call and the results
(which for a while we thought might not even take place) include only those
who ran the course. I ran 33:55 (8:24 pace). Decent hill from mile .5 to
mile 1.5, another one a bit later. Awesome downhill at the end.

Will post Linda's pix shortly.

Glad Lea, Mike and Adam Osmond ran today @ Brickyard.

Nice job on the 4 miler - Lee, Brent, and Sri! It must've been a hot one.
Too bad about people going the wrong way. I would've been quite annoyed
if that happened to me!

Got in a quick 4 miler myself today - 8:42 pace - included about 1 mile on
the beach and a couple of hills on the road.

Good luck to Mike tomorrow.

Hard to believe we're coming home in 2 days. :(

LMC - Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 18:49:28 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

6 miles done today. Total miles for the week- 31.

MCT - Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 19:33:29 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Nipmuck South 14.1 mile trail race.....unofficial finish time of 3:16. Great
race but tough course if you're not used to running trails. There were 80
runners in all. I met Lee's friend Wanda. The weather was not too hot but
very humid which was tough. I was doing well until about 8.5 miles where
I fell hard. Cut my knee and bruised my thigh. It hurt to run at that point
but I didn't have much choice. I slowly improved until mile 13 where I realized
I was lost. They had told us to rely on the Blue Trail markers which I did,
but it was clear I was nowhere near the park. I could hear music and headed
in that direction. I came out in the park off the course and headed towards
the finish. That added half a mile to my run. A number of runners got lost
at various times throughout the race. Some of the lead runners got lost early
before the 3.5 mile mark and had to double back. In addition to my troubles
I ended up with some bad chafing which never happens to me. Overall a good
training race for the Vermont50 in September. Pictures to follow.

tlv - Monday, July 1, 2013 at 03:11:02 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Sorry to hear about your fall, Mike, and getting lost. My navigational skills
suck so that's a huge reason why I don't run trails! Gold Bond powder works
great for chafing. :)

Lee, what happened to 15 with Brent today?

I did a measly 5 (walked the last mile). Anyone ever try to run half drunk?
It's not easy, mon!
