4 mile run at 9:01 pace. Doing a mini-taper before the Ghost Half this Saturday.
Probably won't run on Friday. The body is working right now. I hope its working

5 miles last night on the treadmill, 48 minutes. Doing a light 4 miles tonight.
Ghost Run tomorrow!

MCT - Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 12:01:51 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I got up this morning with very stiff legs. But wanted to take advantage of
a nice morning so I went out and did a combo of walking and running. Did
4 miles and just enjoyed the peace and quiet. Nice race yesterday. Glad I
decided to run it. I think that long gradual incline in the second half of
the race did the job on my legs.

Ghost Stories

tlv - Monday, November 5, 2012 at 00:36:08 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I concur, Mike. My legs were also sore yesterday and today. What's up with
the "flat course" description? All lies!

So I managed 5 miles/10:20 pace today. Weekly total: 32 miles. I'm probably
running 20 miles on Sat. - the longest long run before Roxbury. Who's gonna
be at Brickyard?

mct - Monday, November 5, 2012 at 11:47:59 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Ran 6 miles at 10:54 pace. Legs still sore and can't keep a decent pace. But
a good run for the first of the week.

LMC - Monday, November 5, 2012 at 12:49:04 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Wow, those are some pretty bad race photos of me! Took the day off yesterday,
legs were really sore. Wish they would start the Ghost Run from East Hampton!
I'd rather run 5 miles slightly uphill than 8.1.

LMC - Monday, November 5, 2012 at 15:46:04 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I'll be at Brickyard this Saturday. Would like to run long, 12-14 miles, but
slow - 10:30-11:00 min pace. Would also like to start at 8am.

tlv - Monday, November 5, 2012 at 21:19:43 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Day off for me. Plan to hit the track tomorrow. Lea, I don't get what you
mean about the elevation on the course? My Garmin shows the upward elevation
as starting around mile 8. So we did have roughly 5 miles of uphill running.
Miles 1 through 8 were more downhill. If we went the other way, it would
have been worse, no?

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/239851735

I can meet you at 8 a.m. in the parking lot but will be starting earlier
due to the distance I'm trying to get in (20 miles). Boys have a karate
tournament in the early afternoon that I need to get home and ready for.
Pace sounds good to me.

lrb - Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 01:39:22 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Another real short (~ 4), real slow (~12) run to / around / back the track.
Will have a real track workout w/ Theresa tommorow. After voting. Won't it
be great not to have to listen to political ads?!

MCT - Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 11:18:54 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

5 miles on a cold morning. 26f here. 11 min pace not because I wanted to run

coffee! I'll be at Brickyard this Saturday and will be an early bird but
not sure how long yet. Maybe 20.

Here's a little tutorial on some of the newer features
of Garmin Connect.

You can connect up with friends. Whenever they log a run you will see it
on the right hand side of your Garmin Connect screen. You need to request
that they connect up with you. Here's what my screen looked like today.

You may also edit your own profile. One of the things you can do is upload
a picture of yourself. You may see what my profile looks like by going to

MCT - Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 12:42:32 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Much better run today. Did 7 miles at a 10:24 pace. Felt good. Saw a few snowflakes

tlv - Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 15:21:41 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Forgot to log yesterday: 5.5 miles on the track, 6 x 400 repeats.

Today: 6 miles with 8 x 30 sec. strides. Tryin' to get the legs used to
turning over quicker. May be a lesson in futility - we shall see.

mct - Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 12:02:38 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Did 4 miles in the snow. Used my Duenorth traction aids. Even though dodging
plows and traffic I did a 10:42 pace. Snowing hard at 5am and windy. Here

Also good for shoveling snow on slanted driveways.

LMC - Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 14:10:05 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Was not about to run last night in the snow! Hope to go to the gym tonight.
I have to teach a CPR class on Saturday at 11am in Cheshire so I will have
to cut my Brickyard run short to 10 miles to be back at my house for 10am.
Unless by some miracle my butt gets up to meet the 7am group....

tlv - Friday, November 9, 2012 at 00:34:30 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

5.5 miles/9:39 pace. My plan for Sat. morning is to start at 7 at the VDP
parking lot and run to the Brickyard parking lot. I'm running 20 miles so
I'd prefer not to go back and forth too many times and if I start at Brickyard,
I'll REALLY be running back and forth several times. So when I meet up with
the 8 a.m. folks, I'm assuming we'll run back toward the VDP, which will
give me 11 miles. At that point, I'll decide how to tack on another 9 in
a way that allows me to run longer with the group (i.e. most likely more
back and forth :)).

Lee, I keep forgetting that you can see my Garmin info. now. I was wondering
how you knew about my 400s, since I didn't post my times. I was wondering
whether my watch was broken! LOL Seriously, when I used to run 400 repeats,
they were always between 1:48-1:52. The ones I did on Tues. were around
1:40, so a definite improvement.

MCT - Friday, November 9, 2012 at 11:55:05 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

5 miles this morning at a 10:19 pace. Nice day for a run. For Saturday....I
will run to the Brickyard VDP from my house and meet Tracy at 7am, run with
her to the original Brickyard parking lot and then back. Once back at the
VDP I'll peel off and run home. That should be about 20 miles for me.

tlv - Friday, November 9, 2012 at 20:08:43 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I was just going to walk today and then changed my mind once I started. I
walked .5 then ran .5, alternating this pattern for a total of 6 miles (so
3 miles of running and 3 miles of walking). Average pace was 10:45/mile,
even with walking half of it. I'm excited to build my walking speed,
as I'm going to need this ability for the ultras I do in 2013.

Mike, see you and any other early birds at 7 at VDP. See all of the worms
at 8 at Brickyard.

MCT - Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 15:18:35 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Nice 20 miles today. 10:50 pace. I went back on some decent hills with a 400ft
elevation. Had to walk a bit between 17-18 on those hills. Check out the
Garmin graphs. Big week for mileage as I hit 47 miles with the run today.
BTW---It was Wild Kingdom day. Lani saw a bear and I had a bobcat run across
the street on my way back. Sunday will be a day off. Back at it again on
Monday with the HTC 8K Cross Country race next weekend.

10.90 mi - 2:01:23 - 11:08 min/mi - my inaugural appearance as a worm - went
well - great to run w/ Lani initially, then Lea, Mike, Tray and Dave. One
by one, all but Tray peeled off / turned back. Got to VDP and was finally
completely abandoned - Tray continued past VDP, leaving me no choice but
to fend for myself and make it back to the old parking lot. Lani, Linda and
Tracy "lectured" me on running too much before the Weston 1/2 tomorrow morning.
Mr. Mike looks like a winner this week in the mileage department. Let's see
... Sunday 0 Monday 3.85 Tuesday 4.69 Wednesday 5.03 Thursday 0 Friday 11.29
Saturday 10.9 ... 35.76 miles. Yup, he's a winner. Way to go today, everybody.
'specially Mike and Tray w/ 20 a piece.

LMC - Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 19:37:21 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

10.5 mile today at Brickyard. So glad I got up early! Thank to Lani for running

tlv - Monday, November 12, 2012 at 00:39:28 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

20 miles at Brickyard and toward Collinsville on Sat. Average pace was 10:29.
Last mile was 8:30. After eating so much last night, today's 5 mile run
turned into 8 miles. I threw in a few walk breaks during the first 3 miles
and then ran the rest of the way. Tried to incorporate some hills. Average
pace 10:19. Still feel like I need to run another 20 miles!

MCT - Monday, November 12, 2012 at 11:55:13 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

LMC - Monday, November 12, 2012 at 20:41:11 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

10 mile run today at Brickyard. 1:40:22, 10 minute pace. It was very warm
outside! No bear sightings! Also worked out in the yard for 2 hours. Did
not run yesterday.

tlv - Monday, November 12, 2012 at 22:36:25 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Guess you got the day off, Lea. Great day for running. Almost too warm.
I did 6 miles/9:57 pace with 6 x 30 sec. sprints during the last 2 miles.

I know I'm planning ahead but is anyone interested in a long run on Fri.

Many options.

MCT - Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 11:34:47 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

LMC - Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 13:18:32 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Tracy - I am working the day after Thanksgiving so I can't run. First time
working that day in almost 10 years. Figure it will be a nice quiet day here
at the office to get a lot of work done. I'm doing a solo run the day of
Thanksgiving since it's guaranteed that my husband is working.

My back is really sore from packing close to 12 bags of leaves yesterday.
Tells me I need to start strength training again! 4 mile run on the treadmill
tonight plus a yoga class.

Ran to Wethersfield Cove and back. Mike, look at my pace and consider yourself
a speed demon :)

Tray, if Linda and I are here for Thanksgiving I'll go long on Friday. Either
Ferry Landing or Cheshire would be good. We're still trying to figure out
if we'll go to Vermont or stay here. I think Linda's leaning here right now.
Which I would love. I can't think of a better way to spend Friday than to
run long w/ as many Brickyarders as we can muster.

10 miles total today - mixed pace. Ran 4 miles on the road near Wolcott High
School to warm up. I think I tired myself out too much though because Wolcott
is very hilly! By the time I got to the track, I only had enough steam to
do 4 x 400s. I ran 2 more miles on the track with some short sprints thrown
in and then back on the road for a 2 mile cool down.

5.5 miles/9:45 pace. So frustrated with Asics. Have to send back my new shoes
because nimbus 14 is worse than nimbus 13! They constructed the top of the
shoe so that there is an extremely uncomfortable seam that bears down on
the top of the foot. Stupid, stupid, stupid shoe manufacturers. Should
I hold out any hope for nimbus 15?

Mike, chicken soup, ginger ale, and ice cream - the perfect meal for a cold

Lea, will you be at Hubbard Park on Thanksgiving? I'm thinking of going

MCT - Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 17:24:11 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

The Race From Hell---my 8K experience......
Let me start by pointing out Kelly and Shawn did another great job managing
the race. Organized, well marked, and plenty of food. BUT....my day was(excuse
the language) -shitty. First I had a relapse with my cold and almost cancelled.
At 4am I was lying on my couch shivering, achy, and non stop nose blowing.
But that improved a bit by 8am and I went for it. The race started OK and
I kept at my target of 9:30-9:45 pace. Stumbled here and there but a nice
run except for the runny nose and coughing. At about 3.5 miles I come across
a guy with a bloody leg who had fallen. He was hunched over. When I inquired
if he was OK he said he was. But he had A car key in his pocket which had
gone flying when he fell. Of course the woods were covered thick with leaves
so he and I were "feeling" around but never found the key. I had stopped
my Garmin and figured at the finish I would plea that they record my Garmin
time instead of the tag time which was minutes longer. No big deal right?
So I'm about 1/4 mile from the finish and look at my Garmin. It was OFF!
I had my road ID next to it and it hit the off button. Therefore the only
time on record will be the tag time which was around 50:35. And of course
I coughed, hacked and shivered all the way home. Ugly day.

mile marker signs. She must have also powered up the worst hill because
she stopped for a bathroom break, took pics of her signs, and wasn't even
a minute behind me getting to the top!

I turned around twice while running back down the hill to add some more mileage/hill
repeats. Ran a total of 9 miles and walked for 1 mile at the end. My hips
and buns are killing me. Tomorrow is going to be painful.

Lea, the elevation chart reflects my 2 additional hills but you can see the
elevation gain from the start to mile 3, the top of the hill.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Hope those who raced did well and had fun.

Barton 5K

Awesome job Tray and Miss Lea. I wonder how Mr. Brent did. Took me just under
25 minutes to run my 5K in Vermont. Lots of friends came. 400+ runners and
walkers. Especially happy to hear Tray thought Lea did well and totally impressed
that Tray did what she wanted to do. 9 miles. Look forward to seeing how
Barbara and Dave did at the 5K in Farmington. I am about to walk w/ Mary
Donnell, Erek Heminghausen and maybe others for a bit before we have a Thanksgiving
dinner here in East Burke, VT

MCT - Thursday, November 22, 2012 at 23:26:41 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Ran the GO Fitness 5K in Farmington(old Malibu fitness course under new name).
26:39 at a 8:36 pace. I still have a cold and not 100%. 400 runners so still
a good turnout. Dave and Barb were there and also ran it. I haven't found
the times yet but Dave was burning up the course and well ahead of me. Not
sure where Bard ended but she and I were in the same vicinity most of the
course. Rushed home to get the turkeys in and prep for the 15 people coming
over. Good job Tracy, Lea, and Lee.

MCT - Friday, November 23, 2012 at 12:48:58 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

6 miles today post big dinner. Pace 10:44. No to start the Christmas lights
and finish raking.

LMC - Friday, November 23, 2012 at 13:32:28 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Thank you for the kind words Tracy! My Garmin died before the run so I have
no idea of my overall pace. It was sort of refreshing not being able to look
at the watch. Pictures of the mile marker signs I made are on my Facebook
page. I plan on 5 miles tonight on the treadmill plus a yoga class. I think
I"ll be at Brickyard more towards 12 noon tomorrow; my hubby wants to take
his bike up while I run.

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!

tlv - Friday, November 23, 2012 at 22:55:19 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Congrats to yesterday's racers! Slackin' and I ran 16 miles/10:35 pace at
Ferry Landing. Only saw one other runner - a youthful looking girl - who
blew by us twice, probably running a 7:30 pace. Beautiful morning, almost
spring-like.

Outside lights are up. Pre-lit Christmas tree has been up for a week but
remains undecorated. On my to do list for tomorrow. Supposed to take the
day off from running but I don't know if I can! I think I need an intervention!!

MCT - Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 12:24:15 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

9 miles but was supposed to do 15. My cold hangs on and I am still congested.
Today convinced me to go to the clinic and find out why I can't get rid of
the cold. Coughing but no fever, etc. Can't get myself to run a good pace
no matter how I try. Tomorrow is a day off and I'm flying to Chicago for
work. If feeling better I'll be running there on Monday.

MCT - Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 17:39:16 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

--->Update on my cold....after visiting the doctor I have an upper respiratory
infection and the doc put me on antibiotics. Should be fine in a few days.
Lungs just not working at full capacity being all congested.

I ran 20.5 in Vermont this morning. About 10:15 average moving pace. Coming
home tomorrow around 2 PM. Will run short w/ "Kingdom Krazies" at 7 AM tomorrow.
So glad I finally got a long one in before Roxbury. Brent's talking 14 at
Brickyard next Sunday after 2 miler on Saturday. Anybody else in?

tlv - Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 02:16:48 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

So I managed just fine taking the day off from running. Got the tree done,
as well as some much needed cleaning.

Mike, I suspected that you probably had an infection, which is why you weren't
getting any better. Good thing you got it diagnosed before you ended up
with bronchitis or pneumonia.

Lee, nice long run! Did you stop for margaritas along the way? :)

I could probably make it to Brickyard next Sun. before church and at least
run some of the 14 miles with everyone. I would probably start at 7:30 so
I could be done by 9:30/9:45. Now that it's getting colder, it stinks running
so early in the AM!

Did about 6 w/ my Vermont friends this morning. Some of us went on the trail,
some went 8. I went 6 w/ my friend Candace. Have sniffle and a soar throat
:(

Finally home. Brent ran a 10K in Stratford this morning. No report yet on
how that went.

tlv - Monday, November 26, 2012 at 00:24:42 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

6.5 miles/9:53 pace. Went up the 1+ mile hill twice. It was much more fun
running down it!

Lee, rest up. Hope you feel better.

Slackin' is secretly racing? We might need to schedule an intervention...

lrb - Monday, November 26, 2012 at 02:05:07 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Ms Vroeginday has used the word "intervention" twice in recent days. She has
recognized the need for some outside source to control her need not to run
(which she seems to have a pretty good handle on) and Slackin's not to race
(failing miserably). For a little bathroom humor, we bring you

Ran 7 miles in Chicago this morning. Nice weather. 10:52 pace. Feeling much
better and the antibiotics are working. Always fun to run in the city here
because there is so much to see.

Couldn't get out during daylight so went out at 6 p.m. for my run. It was
awesome! Between my lighted cap and numerous houses decorated with Christmas
lights, it was pretty easy to see. Ran 5 miles/9:11 pace.

So I'm at work today trying to figure out a client's final account. I'm
chomping on gum and all of a sudden, I started thinking about the secretary
in the Carol Burnett Show clips. I totally felt like Mrs. Wiggins today.
LMAO

So does that make Brent Mr. Tudball? Ha ha ha!

LMC - Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 16:33:45 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Bernie Jurale Memorial Run to Castle Craig (Meriden) will be Sunday, Jan 27,
2013. Fun run, refreshments at the end. No entry fee. I'll post start time
when confirmed.

tlv - Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 01:10:15 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Didn't run today. :( Wasn't a scheduled day off but just couldn't muster
the energy. Will go out tomorrow morning before work.

Lea, search for lighted caps on Amazon in the Sports and Outdoors section.
The cap I bought is no longer available but they have several different
choices.

MCT - Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 12:26:31 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Still in Chicago. Did 6 miles at 10:19 pace. Ran north to Lincoln Park. Love
it out here but heading back tonight. Not sure who left the post about Saturday
but I probably will run at Brickyard. But I start at 7am because I have to
get done relatively early. I may do 8-10 miles.

Beautiful morning for a run. Got in 5.5 miles/9:28 pace before work. There
was a lot of black ice! Felt my feet slip quite a few times.

MCT - Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 23:26:56 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Ran an easy 4 miles today. I found out I am being allowed in the Roxbury Marathon.
Just a week away. I haven't trained much but who cares. I'll just have fun
with it. The course is 5 loops which will be good practice for the Lake Waramuag
Ultra in April.

tlv - Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 23:39:15 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

6 miles/9:02 pace. Ran 3 miles mostly uphill and then back down. My ultimate
goal is to run the second mile, which is the hilliest, at a sub-10 pace.
Today, I ran it in 10:21.

Mike, now that you're breaking into the ultra domain, I have a good book
you may want to read, "Relentless Forward Progress" by Bryon Powell. It's
even got a training plan for a 50 mile race based on 50 miles/week. Believe
it or not, you can prep. your body to run an ultra with that amount of training.
I'll bring it to Roxbury. T-9 days!

lrb - Friday, November 30, 2012 at 01:26:16 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Hey Mike,

Glad you're in. I've been sick for a few days so have not run for two days.
Am still racing Saturday. And will run Sunday w/ Tray and Brent @ Brick.
I like your attitude about Roxbury. Tracy's book sounds interesting. Put
me on the waiting list for it!

Lee

MCT - Friday, November 30, 2012 at 11:24:25 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

5 miles today at 10:41 pace. Basic stuff. I can be at Brickyard tomorrow at
7am. I have to be home early to do yard work, Christmas Lights, etc. I might
jump in one of the Sunday races.

LMC - Friday, November 30, 2012 at 13:22:49 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I will be at Brickyard on Sunday, 7:30am. 14 miles is the plan, will have
to take it slow since I haven't run anything over 12 in a long time.

MCT - Friday, November 30, 2012 at 23:16:28 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

After Brickyard on Saturday morning I might just show up at the Tinsel Fun
Run in Berlin. Have to watch Tracy repeat her win from last year.

tlv - Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 00:46:09 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

I had a plan to run "Tray's 5K" today as a warm-up for tomorrow. Running
the 5K (albeit in a shitty time) the day before Wallingford seemed to work
out as a good training strategy. But yesterday when I was running the hills,
I felt a twinge-y kind of pain on the top part of my left foot sort of near
the ankle. It's just an annoying pain but I'm always paranoid about making
something worse if I ignore it and run so I took the day off and did the
rowing machine for 30 min. I'm hoping I am not too sluggish from the day
of rest to run fast enough tomorrow. And oh no, now Mike is really putting
on the pressure. :0

lrb - Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 03:32:03 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Tracy's worried about not breaking her last year win cuz she took 1 day off.
I've not run for three full days. I'll either crush the course or totally
fall apart. And what's this I hear about Taricani triple dipping? Brickyard,
Berlin, Glastonbury?
