... Thanks Tracy. I hope your running goes well this winter for April 2015

So, here we are in October! I ran 5 miles yesterday, 9/30 in a 9:23

rained the whole way but not too heavy -- a chilly 51º.

Little rainy. Real nice easy run. Will do 3x1000 at Fleet Feet track workout

From Alli (track coach)

"This week's workout is going to be a short but intense workout of 3x1000
meters with a focus on keeping a consistent time. 1000 meters is two and
a half laps around the track. The recovery for the run will be a 200m rest/walk
back to our starting point."

Net gain in speed = (54 secs fast - 32 secs slow) = 22 secs faster.

Summary:

The total time devoted to speed (not including jogs and walking between
reps) was 32:41. The total distance for speed was 4.712 miles. This
equates to an average mile pace of 6:56. From above, it appears I was
faster than expected by 5 seconds in pace per mile for the workout as a
whole.

One variable (which most likely contributed to the faster than expected
speeds per rep was that I did more walking between reps and got a bit
more rest even though the distance of those walks was shorter (on
average) than 2x the rep distance.

Note: The expected paces for this 3rd interval workout were taken
directly from the exact results of the last workout. Once again, I was
surprised by the overall speed increase of 5 seconds per mile despite
the slightly higher total distance.

Man, I think I should reduce my vo2 max index level! Thanks for letting
me know with my award. I sometimes (often actually) think my entries
sound too impressive - as in "SEE WHAT I DID?" - so I just want to say I
hope my entries aren't a turn-off. When I started to run, I so needed
something to stay motivated. I appreciate having this virtual "place"
to record things! Actually, my guess (I hope) is that I'm not sounding
too impressive and that, if anything, it's just *a LOT words* in an
otherwise brief collection of friendly running reports.

As for today's entry? Rested!

Aya yai yai, what a day! No mud though! So I'm laughing when I get my bib
this morning and it's got this bright yellow sticker that says "HIGH FALL
RISK." Apparently, anyone who has never run Nipmuck before gets that or
a bright orange sticker which says the same thing. Not sure of the color
significance - there probably isn't any. I told Joe I felt like a dementia
patient. LOL

So the race starts and it's single track with everyone running right behind
one another. It's a little nerve-wracking. I never want to hold anyone
up but I don't like going too fast and risk falling either. I was initially
in front of Wanda and Michelle. About 2 miles into the race, Wanda comes
up behind me and asks how I am and I tell her that trail races stress me
out! She says I have to relax and look up or around or something like that.
I told her I can't because I have to watch my footing or I'll fall. No
sooner did I say that then I went down and pretty damn hard right on my quad.
I think I slammed it into a rock. I got up pretty quickly but my leg was
throbbing and it continued to hurt through the rest of the race. I even
took 2 Ibuprofen pretty soon after the fall but that didn't too much to help
with the pain.

Right after I fell I started running behind 2 people who seemed to be taking
it pretty easy - Brenda and Dane. I ended up running the rest of the race
with Brenda. Dane took off after a few miles. Brenda and I picked up Kelley
along with the way and the 3 of us had a fabulous girl bonding time. Honestly,
without these 2, I don't know how I would've made it through the day. It
definitely would've been a suffer-fest instead of the positive experience
it was (even with the leg pain). Nearly 7 damn hours to do this race. I
think our time was 6:52. Yes, I know that is slow but I don't care! I didn't
kill myself. I had fun. I met 2 wonderful ladies. I'd say that's a success.

Obviously, I seriously underestimated Nipmuck, thinking I would be an hour
or more faster than I was. Still not sure how Bimbler's will go but I know
I will finish, barring any unforeseen circumstances. It would be cool to
find runners going my pace, like I did for this race. It really makes all
the difference to be out there with people versus all by your lonesome.

Hey - Nice running there everyone! The Nipmuck FALL experience sounded
actually pretty pleasant (Tray)! Yes it must have been a _____ to take
the spill but it was impressive how you blocked out what could have been
a totally tough day. Nothing like bonding! I just finished Amby
Burfoot's book: "A Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life" and (if you
haven't read it) you sooo ran Nipmuck with best possible attitude! Nice
race! A+. The pictures of the race on the blog are great! Speaking of
pictures, there's this ghost floating all over this page! Funny how he
popped in here! OK, so I see that my vo2 max rating is climbing :)
Gotta log in here! Today it was 7 miles just after finishing Amby's
inspiring book! The moon was pretty full and the shadows reminded me of
when I was 10 running in Weston on full moon August evenings in the warm
wind. Ah to be 10 again!!! But I'll take 65, too! It's OK.

8.5 miles/9:41 pace.

Oh no, Mike! Not the dreaded plantar fasciitis. Well, it sucks to run when
you're in any kind of pain and it definitely slows you down. My near 7 hour
trail marathon last week is a testament to that. I'd like to think it toughens
us though to push through and gut it out, so to speak. So well done on persevering.
There will always be another race.

Lee, you are right - Roxbury IS a road marathon. I guess I meant I was feeling
left out on all the October prime season road marathons. I am mildly looking
forward to Bimbler's though. LOL We were supposed to have glorious weather.
Now it's looking like AM showers and high of 61. I'll just be happy not

see them at the 16 mile mark at our estimated time. Wanda finally arrived
and I ran a couple with her then I split off and finally found Michelle at
the turnaround in the out and back. Ran her in. Together these two girls
covered 104.8 miles this weekend. Saw Kim Marchand and Jeanne Corey. Linda
and I did the Cliff Walk after, spent too much money at a local restaurant
and watched the sun set on Ocean Drive.

Well, I see a lot has happened in 5 days! I now have a working computer
and got the internet connection to work. Was given this machine several
months ago from my employer. It works like a charm!

I hope the foot improves over time, Mike. Lee's right - your looking up
as best you can. Good to read about your run, Lee in Newport with Wanda
and Michelle. Some pretty amazing performances in Hartford. Nice job to
everyone. Good pics. I saw the ghost in the ET tree, Lee. I also now
know what phasmophobic means, Mike. I'm feeling "less distracted" now
also!

OK, so to catch up with my logging, here's a review:

On Thursday, 10/9 I ran 5.16 miles in an 8:42 pace. The next day I ran
5 miles in a 9:30 pace. I rested Saturday and then ran a 5 mile race in
Haverhill, MA on Sunday. I had been feeling a feeling preoccupied about
some stuff before and during the race so my time was a little off, but
it was a great day to race weather-wise. Great crowd. Enjoyed
connecting with others before the train ride home. For the week, I ran

Well, I have some catching up to do again here! First though, about
that race food Tray: Yes, there was a ton of it! They do it up big each
year. It's a loud, beer-drinking, Irish family food fest! Mike, good
luck in Roxbury when it comes. And Lee, your 400 and 800 time are
extremely similar to mine. I may need a jet-pack assist when we do the
1/2 together in Wolf Hollow on 11/23. Wow!!! And, as far as Casper
goes, he blends in quite nicely in the trees when he floats over the
trees and path at Reservoir 3. Very nice.

Still feeling a bit "off" these days but trying to keep the running
going. Monday, 10/13 I ran 6.5 in a 9:00 pace. Tuesday, I did 4.0
miles in a 9:25 pace. I didn't feel like running Wednesday, but put in
quite a few bike miles that made up for it. About 35. Took a lot of
fall foliage pictures and didn't do much of anything else that day. On
Thursday (today) I was going to run 6.5 but put in 7 miles in a steady
rain the whole way. The pace tonight was 8:41. About two days ago I
decided NOT to do any more intervals before the 1/2 in late November,
but to focus on more distance runs instead. Today I made a lot more
progress on some "stuff" at home that's been weighing on me, so I'm
beginning to feel better about that. Will try to put in 6.5, 6.0 and 9.5
(on Fri, Sat and Sun) to end the week with just under 40 miles. Maybe
I'll tack on .5 to make it 40.

AAARGH! I CANNOT READ THE LOG ENTRIES BECAUSE CASPER'S FAT GHOST ASS IS PERPETUALLY
FLOATING OVER THE WORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE NEEDS TO GO BYE
BYE OR BE REDUCED TO A MISNISCULE GHOST! PRONTO! YES, I NOW FULLY ACKNOWLEDGE
(AND EMBRACE) MY CASPERCIDAL URGES. :P

If poor little totally underappreciated Casper ain't tiny enuf for Trail Runner
Girl now we will finally bow to her incessant bickering and blow him away
forever. Me, I practically need a magnifying glass to see his smallest self
and his biggest self covers about three letters when he's over letters which
isn't always and yes I love runons and Happy All Hallow's Eve to you all.

Nice and easy 6 miles to Sessions Woods today. Not sure what I'm doing this
weekend as I have lots of home projects to get caught up on. Casper.....isn't
a ghost supposed to be transparent? If Casper was a real ghost we could read
right through him!!

ceb - Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 00:34:16 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

My take on little (excuse me; infinitesimal) Casper is that he is kinda
cool. At first, when he really DID have a fat ghost ass, he WAS like
totally in the way and, at that time, I was hoping my mouse would scare
him off to the side, by way of dragging him off into an unseen ghost
hibernation land. But my mouse had no powers and he persisted in his
big, gray, OPAQUE, fat way -- until said runner girl pointed out he had
some "in your face" issues. NOW he is even more interesting while (true
- not in one's face anymore) he floats around because he makes the whole
log look like a ghost aquarium with one tad-ghost in it! A tad-ghost is
a very small creature found only in text ponds and which, over time, is
reduced in size by runner comments. He persists as he swims though. He
never gives up. His [at some point literal] disappearance may only take
place in the event of a passing holiday or, better yet, the introduction
of another. Just my guess. I say, let him stay for a while longer.

already decided.

Hmm, I haven't run. I'm only posting to comment about Casper. I'm wondering
if he displays differently on my computer. He's always been huge and floats
right over the words - even when Lee said he made him much smaller. I tried
dragging him over with the mouse too, Chip. LOL Didn't work. He's just
as large today on my computer screen as he was yesterday and the day before
that and the day before that. To give you perspective, he's as wide as both
of my hands side by side with fingers spread! So imagine that floating over
the words! He is eventually floating to the side of the screen, which is
new, but he takes his sweet ole time.

Anyway, Bimblers tomorrow. Oye! And just for the record, the course is notoriously
long - 33 miles. Shoot me now. I've still got a lump on my leg from Nipmuck.

Ran the Hartland Harvest 5K today. 30.44 which is a 9:52 pace. Not good. My
leg is sore like a pulled hamstring but I have no idea how that could happen.
Heel is sore as well. I am resting until the leg feels better. Maybe a few
days or longer but I must do it now if I have any hope for a decent Roxbury.
Guess I'll just sit around and watch 'ol Casper float!! Maybe a turkey will
appear soon!!

Casper Help Desk (CHD) at your service here! Lee can maybe chime in
here, but it sounds like you may need the latest version of Java
on your computer, Tray. Just guessing here! You may have a Mac instead
of a Windows based PC. If THAT is the case then Lee will definitely
need to chime in here since I'm not sure what a Mac would need to
understand ghost weight loss commands which Lee has been providing.

I did however just learn that MAC computers need more up-to-date Java
programs as is shown in this graphic.

If you DO have a MAC, then you might try downloading Java for a MAC here.

If not having Java is the problem, you can find it here
for a Windows-based computers. I think Casper does not recognize a good
weight loss program even when one exists near by. He just needs to find
one and soon he will be about as big as the word "big" in this sentence!
The only other thing I can think of is that your browser may need
updating in some way -- like maybe from Internet Explorer to Mozilla's
Firefox. Again, Lee is the expert in the area of fully understanding
Ghost weight reduction programs. I can appreciate now that Casper's
been a pain in the butt.

I am at a loss as to why cute little Casper is still big on Tray's computer.
I will keep him for a bit but clearly he is not working on her 'puter.

My bad on Bimblers date. Hope it goes well for you tomorrow Tray.

Chip et al. This is NOT a Java problem. Our friendly ghost is driven by *JavaScript*
which has absofrigginlootly nothing to do with Java. It's too bad the names
are so similar.

Last week's mileage was 40.0 miles. Today's run was 6 miles on a NEW
pretty hilly course - which took me 3 miles out to the Stone Zoo and
back. It was in Stoneham. Maybe that's why they call it the Stone Zoo!

A few days ago, as mentioned, I went on a 30+ mile bike ride out through
Arlington, Lexington and Acton. The colorful tree picture below was one
of the ones I liked. To give some idea of WHERE these trees are
actually located on earth, I've provided a series of other Google Map
images which show this more clearly - in relation to Hanscom Field Air
Force Base in Lexington. Obama lands here when he visits Boston. Kinda
cool to actually see the GREEN versions Google took with their cameras!

Note: The yellow circles and arrows show the trees in question.

One Historical Note:

I'm not sure is this will be interesting, since it is more like a lesson in
American history than anything else, BUT...

There are 5 images above. On the middle THREE images,
there is a label for "Battle Rd. Trail." This is where Paul
Revere rode his horse on the evening of April 18, 1775 to warn Samuel
Adams and John Hancock that British troops were marching to arrest them.
I was surprised to learn that he rode through Medford, from Boston. My
Mystic Valley running route incorporates part of his ride!
This link tells about his ride and where it took him (and about two others who joined him!)
This next link has a map in it, which shows the course of his ride in complete detail.
I suppose we would not be here today had it not been for his "LOUD"
ride. He had reasons to be! The Battle on the Green (in Lexington)
changed the course of history!

Ran on a new route to Winchester, MA via Arlington. Some minor hills

Not sure if my comment will show up on the blog, but if not, it looks like
you all had a fun time in Glastonbury. Loved the pig outfit, Lee. The

On this 8 mile run out along the Mystic River, I had to make a VERY wide arc
on a BIG lawn. There were some 50 Canadian geese dead center in the 12" dirt
path in the lawn. Had I not taken the wide turn, I probably would have been
attacked! They can be kinda mean sometimes. They were still there on my
return route, but had relocated - as shown by the 2nd arc. My watch picked
up the details nicely - (except for the geese of course)!

Mike, my 2 cents - I think you need your leg properly diagnosed so you know
exactly what you're dealing with instead of guessing and self-diagnosing.
Lee is right, Roxbury is still several weeks away and plenty of time to
recover - IF you don't make it worse.

MCT - Friday, October 31, 2014 at 09:47:13 (GMT) (subtract 4 for local time)

Tracy you are absolutely correct. Roxbury looms and the thought of missing
it prevents me from doing the right thing. I know better about injuries but
my fear of not being able to run combined with male stubbornness keeps me
from getting checked out. Have to think a lot today and make a decision.
I know what that decision is, just have to make myself do it and plan for
next year. Anyway....good luck to those running the Airline Trail Half tomorrow.
